hi all i have taken about 500 pics on my d700 and only when i put on computer i noticed a black blotch top right hand side in 99% of the photos even at f2.8, so i took lens off, mirror up and i could not see nothing but a pin head, im supprised that it shows so badly, is this a common problem with full frame as i have never had this with a crop camera thanks in advance.

Shouldn't be on a brand new body with sensor cleaning built in. I've never had anything show up at f2.8 and I shoot quite a bit of motocross - and have done with a range of bodies.
 
There's a pin head on your sensor? I am confused...

Can you upload a pic with the offending mark?
 
Page 392 of the D700 manual tells you how to use the camera's self clean function.
When you consider the size of each individual pixel on the sensor, it's not surprising that something the size of a pinhead shows up so much on an image.

I had one on my new D700 a few weeks back, rocket blower did the trick
 
thanks all, i used the cleaning sytem and nothing and had it turned on for start up.
and i ment its about the size of a pin head, im just supprised it shows so big.

Maybe a paint flake that has come from inside a lens.
 
When I have a symptoms like that on my D200 I know it's time to clean the sensor - use the swabs and Eclipse (or Eclipse E2 whichever is for your sensor) cleaning solution and it will be shiny clean. It only takes about 10-15 seconds to do.

for one bit of dust like that probably a rocket blower would do the trickz0r

true, but if it is stuck pretty fast and it's there in 995 (see what I did there? :p) of his photos, it's probably been there from new in which case I would probably be tempted to go and get a replacement

maybe but this is only a couple days old, and had only 2 lenses on. never in all my time of having any of my dslrs have i had such a small bit of dirt show up so badly and never at f2.8.
I have had cameras for years with out cleaning the sensor and crud not showing up untill about f16 and then thats only just noticable.
This was i real supprise.
I just wondered if full frames were more prone to showing dust on the sensor.

All sensors are dust magnets (they all have small static field that attracts dust particles). The thing is when you change the lens or use zoom you may let the dust in without noticing it. Anyway just a suggestion :-)

never had any real problems with dust. and as for my cameras i hardly change lenses. one d300 always had my 18-200mm on the other has 50-500mm os on all the time and my d700 for now will go between my nikon 28-70mm and my nikon 70-200mm, untill i decide if im gonna buy a d400 or another d700 or both and sell the d300.
 
Apparently the D3 (and D700) shutter is renounded for particles of carbon fibre coming adrift early on as it beds in. I've cleaned mine countless times in the 1st 10K and it's only just settling in...
 
If it is 0.5mm long that is still covering 60 pixels on the sensor. At 72dpi on screen at 1 to 1 it will be around 20mm long.
