A mate's just asked me to reccommend a good set-up for a 5D mk2. He's doing all-round stuff for angling magazines and he likes the looks of the 5D for A) it's full frame sensor (for the quality) and B) the build quality. Lens-wise I suggested a 17-40mm f/4 –*one of my fave lenses ever – and a 100-400mm IS for long stuff. He's then going to look at either a 28-70mm f/2.8 or a 28-135 for covering that middle ground - have I steered him in the right direction? I'm not that up on Canon gear of late....

The Canon pro lens line up for full frame is brilliant. You can either go f/2.8, or f/4.

16-35L 2.8
24-70L 2.8
70-200L 2.8 IS/non IS
Primes

17-40L 4
24-105L 4 IS
70-200L 4 IS/non IS
100-400L IS

That's the way to do it, if you've got the budget ;)

Dizmatt, I was thinking that but then again, he likes what i can do with my 1-24 Nikon, and that'll be about the equivalant, if a little wider. I was going to suggest the 24-105 but forgot about in the excitement of spending his money :)

Depends on how much they have to spend HoppyUK's f2.8 selection on a 5D is a superb selection although a little pricey.
The 17-40 is ok on a 5D but the 16-35 is the dogs danglies.

Why isn't the 17-40 that good on full frame? Is it edge sharpness? I've only ever used them on crop sensors and they're fantastic lenses. Plus, a darn sight cheaper than the 16-25.

You can find fault with any lens. 16-35 is soft in the corners at f/2.8, for instance. But overall you'll not get any better than Canon L series for full frame.

With the 5D Mark II he better get some serious primes, especially in the wide angle field.
The Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II is a good zoom, but not that great, and the first version was terrible in the corners.

Most of tele lenses in the Canon Pro range are excellent, including the zooms.

For a start either 24-105mm or 24-70mm would be great lenses + 580EX. Then he could build on this set up. 24mm is already crazy wide so there is no need to get 17-40 until the job demands it. 70-200mm (any version) would get some great use - but it is better think which one he actually needs.

28-135mm is a consumer lens and should probably stay on film / consumer digital cameras.

Too many 'would be's in this thread. Find out from somewhat that HAS both the body/lens being commented on!

Or you can go primes all the way :p

Without knowing budget, and what he shoots, its difficult to recommend.

for general shooting and wideness.. a friend of mine does some great stuff with a Tokina 17mm Prime I think on the 5D...iirc

and a general mid zoom would help him get into the 'action' very nicely.

I have the 5d mk1 and a 24-105mm lens... I replaced my 28-135mm with this lens and to be honest the diference in IQ is imense.... I've not had enough time to do much with it as of yet... but you can see the improvement straight away!... I cant decide what my next lens will be either... I cant decide as of yet and think i'm going to wait a year anyway... just concentrate with the lens i've got and get used to what I can do with that before adding more lenses... I had a 15-30mm sigma but I sold that... I struggled with it and found my results at 15mm quite wackey... what looked good in the viewfinder def was not ok in print... huge foregrounds and not much scene at times... I have a feeling 24mm might be wide enough for me... where as 28mm def was not... its amazing what that 4mm at the wide end can do! so maybe i'll upgrade my 75-300mm first to a 70-200 with 1.4converter... or buy a 20mm prime... or get the 17-40mm who knows... I dont.... I think you are best to get one at first then wait a year and see what you need next... buy good glass and learn to love it... then add more!

He's gone for the 5Dmk2 + 17-40mm+100-400mm and is looking at a 28-XXX for the mid range. The crazy-wide of the 178-40mm will come in handy for him because he shoots a lot on charter boats where space is severely limted. I doubt the issue of edge softness on the 17-40 will be that big a problem*–*have you seen how press printers can screw up images? It's not pretty....

Having used the 24-105 and the 28-135, I'm not sure he'd be happy with the latter once used to the L glass if only for the ergonomics.
