And it was predicted that this banter would be summoned...
*this latter point will no doubt have the arguments rolling; but for the same composition of an image with a lens on ff vs. crop, you need to be closer to the object with a ff, and thus the dof is smaller....
...although there was one fatal error in his thinking...
...and bokeh more impressive.
As noted by someone above, the bokeh is lens specific. However, the DoF - DEPTH of field - IS impacted by the sensor size if you are composing the identical shot on a crop and a ff.
Depth of field is a CALCULATED via the following equation:
http://www.dofmaster.com/equations.html
Where:
H - is the hyperfocal distance, mm
f - is the lens focal length, mm
s - is the focus distance
Dn - is the near distance for acceptable sharpness
Df - is the far distance for acceptable sharpness
N - is the f-number
c - is the circle of confusion, mm
Now without even looking at the calculation, we know that if we use the same lens with the same settings, then all of the above variables are constants, except one; 's' - the focus distance, and now I'll explain why;
If we want to FRAME precisely the same shot with both a full frame camera and a crop sensor camera, we will need to be CLOSER to the subject with the full frame camera, and FURTHER away from the subject with the crop sensor camera. Therefore, for each identically FRAMED photo, 's' is smaller when shot with the full frame camera.
Now all you need know is if all variables except 's' are constants, then as 's' tends to zero (shorter focus distance), the depth of field also becomes smaller - or shorter.
So what does that mean? It means the area of the image which appears 'sharp' (or in focus) just in front and just behind the distance at which you focused is smaller; throwing the foreground and background out of focus and making the area in focus stand out more. This video here:
