G10 or G12

Thinking of getting somthing as a back up for my 500d I'm thinking a G10 or G12 what would you recommend ?
 
Reading the reviews at the likes of dpreview, there seems always to be a theme that the latest model cures certain defects which thereby make the older model complete rubbish and no longer worthy of house room.
Quite how the previous models managed to sell despite having terminal defect is part of the magic of marketing.
I started typing this comment with the advice that you should buy the most current model your budget will stand; now I'm less sure:bang:
 
I have a G11 and a friend has a G10. Personally I think the sensor in the G11 is better than the G10, but either are great cameras.
 
Presumably some aspects of the camera have been improved from G10 to G12 but what are they and do they matter to you.
 
Didn't know they made a G11 that's somthing else to consider then just want somthing to take out when I don't want to bring all my dslr kit .
 
Definitely the G12, if you can stretch to the extra ££'s :)

Canon upped the mp count on the G10 from the G9, but realised the error of their ways as cramming too many pixels on to a tiny sensor resulted in poor high ISO performance. With the G11 they reduced the resolution to improve high ISO results. The G12 keeps the modest resolution of the G11 :)

I have a 5D mk II, and my wife has the G9 :) The G series is as close as you'll get to a professional digital compact - it's a great second camera to use alongside a DSLR :thumbs:

I would recommend the G11
my wife loves hers
i would like anouther one but she wont let me as a backup to my 7D
