Perhaps we should have a GAS severity calculator.

1st draft


(Available cash) x (Time since last purchase) x (amount of time spent on equipment forum)
/
(number of uses of current equipment used in last month)

What would the unit be called?


2nd draft

(Available cash) x (Time since last purchase) x (amount of time spent on equipment forum) x (Amount of time viewing pictures at 100%)
/
(number of uses of current equipment used in last month) x (Amount of time viewing pictures at 'fit' )

All GAS has to pass the "can I afford it" measure here. After that, it wears a very well worn path.

  • Day 1: Why would I want it?
  • Day 2: Just think what I could do with?
  • Day 3: how can I live my life without it?

It is unusual for me to get past last ordering time for next day delivery (I normally buy online) on day 3...

My 1st draft: (enough) x (a while) x (too much) / (not enough)
 
If i could afford it, i would have dipped my toe into m43. But after pricing an omd, the 2x 2.8 zooms and the wide zoom and finding it come to over £3k i may have to wait a while!

And since my GAS itch changes from mirrorless to full frame i'm glad haven't had the spare cash since i know i would want the other after putting the money down!

According to the first formula I have a GAS rating of 27,000 assuming that -
Cash is in pounds sterling, time since last purchase is in months and time spent on forum is in hours per day. . . . :S eeeep
 
That would mean the longer it's been since a purchase the higher the number you may well end up with. So x time since last purchase doesn't fit.
 
What is 'fit'? (As in OP's 2nd draft)

I got rid of that problem 10 years ago ;) The new one doesn't question my purchases at all.... (no, she's not available for swapping :p :D)

Thats it! as i predominantly use lightroom i thought this was a universal term....

Perhaps i should bin draft 2, no need to complicate things!

The more time since your last purchase, the more severe the GAS itch?
 
But the formula lessens my end result because I've bought very recently ;)

Now for a maths question...

If x/x=1, 0/x=0 and x/0=infinity, which applies when 0/0?! (I'm not a pixel peeper so in the second draft, the numerator will be 0) I'm also not a lightroom user, so the denominator will also be 0!

Using the first draft is more interesting. Before September, I was so ill that I didn't pick up a camera for a few months let alone use it. Didn't do any shopping either. Spent a fair bit of time here though, mainly in either OOF of the equipment section. Available cash is (give or take a few grand) the same as it is now. GAS factor is a whole pallet of beans! Now though, I am using a camera almost every day and have taken a couple of thousand since christmas. Available cash is about the same, as is the amount of time spent here. I've done some shopping as well, although it's over a week since I bought a camera! GAS factor now is down to a gross of bean cans...

That was my intention. A recent purchase (temporarily) satisfies the itch!
 
Divide by zero and all bets are off! Once infinity is introduced I get confused. Glad you're using the camera more. My use always comes in fits and starts...
