Gear decision wait or not?

Right so i've bought a Fuji XE1 which some of you will know and i am looking for a 56mm lens to go with it. I really don't want to pay the new prices and since they're not exactly being advertised left right and centre what would you do?

1) Wait for a few days and hope the lens comes along.
2) Buy a different Fuji lens in the meantime and have a play with that.
3) Buy some Canon gear again and flog the Fuji body.

I really don't want to wait for weeks and not be able to shoot anything and obviously i wouldn't have bought the body if i wasn't keen to give it a go.

So the question is how long would you wait?
 
surely that depends on your personality.

me personally hate waiting for things, granted it always buggers me up later down the road (money pit cars etc are proof of that), but when i make a decision i want it there and then.
 
Will only a 56mm lens do? If it's for a specific task that no other lens in the line up will do, then you're stuck unless one happens to become available.

Or you could get a different fuji lens from the classifieds and get going learning the camera. You might not even like it - Fuji's are an acquired taste (I have an XPro and an X10). If a 56mm becomes available, then buy it and flog the other lens. Sorted.
 
Why not get the 18-55mm, excellent quality and some places sell them unboxed split from a kit at a reasonable price

Might even come across one on here, been a few for sale recently

Also Fuji are doing 200 quid cash back on two lenses, bought a couple myself from Amazon and just waiting on the cheque

I am not that impatient i have just read tons of reviews and based on these decided that i would blow my budget on the 56mm and try and get to know it.

The problem with buying another lens is then plumping for the 56mm soon after and having to sell the stop gap without losing too much money on it. I honestly thought these lenses popped up more often than they do and it's just playing on my mind that i could wait another couple of weeks, still not find one and end up with a bloody Canon body again !!!! I was thinking about the 35mm as there was/is one available but it feels like a compromise now.
 
If your subject doesn't move or maybe just moves reasonably slowly you could go for a manual lens and adapter. You should be able to pick up a 50mm f1.8 for under £20 or maybe a f1.4 for under £60, personally I think that the f1.8 may be enough, add an adapter for about £10. manual focus should be pretty easy with peaking and /or the magnified view and maybe just spending £30 will give you a working 50mm until a bargain Fuji 56mm turns up? Or, you may find yourself keeping the cheap manual 50mm and not bothering with the Fuji AF lens :D

Scott, presuming you will have the body in the next couple of days? My offer still stands about meeting up and letting you try different lenses.
My 60mm is up for sale at the moment but it doesn't look like anyone is desperate for one just now so presumably I'll still have it for a few days. You can try it in comparison with the 56. I can also bring manual lenses for you to have a try with and could even lend you one if you decide to wait for the 56.

EDIT to add that my ulterior motive is that I want to try the XE1, thinking of maybe adding one to the collection.

How long a gap are we talking? It could be a while before the price drops on the 56mm. In the mean time, you're probably not making much use of the camera? I'd go with woof woof's suggestion. Won't break the bank, and you might just have some fun using older lenses with an adapter.
 
just buy a old manual lens, I think the pratica pb 50mm is cheap and good, there's c/y ? Mount that probably has good ones too. Likely to be abit cheaper than m42 ones
helios 58mm is a good lens too
 
I personally wouldn't buy a MF lens if you are going to be taking pics of moving subjects. Id rather get a 35mm used and sell it for the same money you paid for it once you find a 56.
 
Looks like i'm back on board with Canon. Just have to get my lens offer accepted, collect the 50d from Falkirk tonight and we're good to go. The Fuji will have to wait for now. Silly i suppose but i really need a camera sharpish with my wee boy heading to nursery soon. Can't afford to wait two weeks then not have one. b****r. Now to sell that XE1 that's in the sorting office !!!! Oh the joys.
 
Think. What for? Ha ha. Going to spend some time with the 17-55. Thanks for the advice folks.
