Gear insurance

As i have now owned my first dslr for nearly a year I'm starting to get less careful and with travelling around the world I thought it was probably a good idea to insure my gear for the value of £1000.

But I don't really know where to get it, some places are really expensive, some a extremely high excess....

What do you / have you used? Good experiences? What is the premium and excess etc...

And biggest question is the price fair enough to even justify getting the gear insured in the first place?

Many Thanks

First stop is to contact your home insurer. They can often quote much cheaper rates than the stand alone suppliers. One word of warning though ... read the exclusions very carefully.

Don't go to E&L (Equine and Livestock). They have a bad reputation which is why I just moved away from them and went to Aaduki.

E&L will not cover your kit left in a car if there is ANY access to the boot from within the car (fold down seats, arm rest hatch, estate curtain cover). This was the main reason I left them as I drive an estate which they wouldnt cover for theft from a vehicle. I questioned this with Aaduki and they even wrote it into my policy that my car is covered and they will pay out.

The thing is, wont that put the house insurance up if I claim, much like car insurance?
If you claim on stand alone insurance, do you really think that the price of that won't go up?

Why bother with insurance if you are that worried about premium increase? All insurance will go up each year regardless of claims.

Your house insurance is the best way to cover your equipment at the level you need at present. It will also cover worldwide if you want to take your gear on holiday with you. Check the small print. If you already have "personal possessions away from home" cover (which IMO everyone should have anyway) your camera will be covered but you may need to increase the amount.

I'd bet your house insurance would go up no more than the 1st year cost of standalone insurance.

Other bad points about E&L are

a) although their advertised monthly premiums look cheap , they charge based on lunar months (like you do :shake: ) so you pay 13 times a year

b) their loss adjusters are a bunch of **** - for example a mate of mine got hit by a wave (he was covering a surfing competition) and they refused to pay out on his claim for accidental damage, on the grounds that 'he was negligent to be standing that close to the sea' , I had a similar experience over a lens that got damaged when dropped (which kind of negates the point of having accidental damage cover )

c) When I cancelled my policy they continued to collect premiums until i cancelled the direct debit manually with the bank - it took 6 months to get the money back

etc

I wouldnt touch them with a barge pole

if you want dedicated cover i'd say aaduki, or photoguard - Ive also heard good things about cliik but they dont cover amateurs.

that said - I'm covered for non pro use by my direct line house insurance - extending the policy (to give a higher level of cover out of the house ) cost about a fiver , and when i had a claim, as my no claims is protected , only the cost of no claims protection went up - by a massive £3.75.
