Hi all,
Inspired by the shots I'm seeing on here, and the information/guides provided here too, I finally took the plunge and bought a 100mm Hitech holder, wide angle adaptor ring and a Pro Stop 10.
First shot came out ok (save for the blue cast which I'm pretty sure I can correct):
Obviously, I had to remove the Pro Stop in order to focus and compose the next shot, but as I reinserted it, there seemed to be a little more resistance as it slid in. The shot came out like this (can you see what's happened?):
...the gasket had snagged on the holder and it had torn and folded up inside, sticking itself to the filter surface and, as you can see above, letting in light.
I contacted the seller who, despite having not heard of this kind of problem before, replaced the filter once I'd returned my copy.
Replacement arrived. Same issue :shrug:
I'm not at all hamfisted and, given the problems I'd had with the first one, I slid it into the holder extremely carefully and stopped pushing as soon as I started to feel some resistance. I then unscrewed the adaptor from my lens so that I could get a look at was going on from the inside, so to speak.
In the shot below, I've also removed the adaptor ring, to get a better look:
...the gasket is snagging on a part of the holder! The surface it must slide over isn't smooth, kind of castellated, and so the soft foam gasket is pushed into the gaps as it passes by.
If you imagine sliding-in the filter from the direction shown by the large arrow (below), there are quite a few possible snag points:
I can't understand why that surface isn't smooth, to aid the sliding (not the tearing!).
Anyway, that's the history. The question for you learned people is whether you've experienced this before and whether there is something I'm doing wrong here - but I can't imagine there is really.
The shop has kindly offered to take it back for a refund, but I *really* want some form of 10 Stop filter and would rather it worked. I suppose I would need to ask that the holder is returned too, since it seems to be the most likely culprit here.
