Getting angry

About a year ago I got a Cisco Linksys USB N dongle. Been not too bad until about 6 months ago and the little **** keeps dropping every 30 minutes.

Now, Cicso are supposed to be the dogs dangly things, you know they write the white papers and all. So I'm getting pretty cheesed off. I've had a gander online and changed some settings on the wireless router to the specs advised by Cisco admins but it's still doing it. :annoyed:

Any ideas? It's really annoying when I'm writing an incredibly important reply to a post and it drops connection and I lose the message

Write the reply in notepad and then cut and paste? :p

Try a different wireless channel - you might be clashing with a neighbour.

You got a netgear router? The wireless on mine died and it was much more flaky over the last months of its life. Try your dongle with another router as it might be the dongle that is on its way out. Also did you update any software just before it went flaky? Trying a different usb port, moving the router a bit, changing wireless channels and re-installing the cisco driver software are things you could also try.

Why are you getting ratty with the dongle? I would have thought the router was far more liable to give these problems than the dongle.

You bully!

Oh God, dare I say it.... The router I'm using a D-Link Virgin special.....

But it's not the router, I'm sure of it. Laptop never drops, phone never drops, just the desktop. All I have to do it pull it out the cradle and pop it back in, but it is annoying.

Done all the channel swapping etc. The USB dongle gets mighty hot. I'm tempted to just get a PCI card instead and let the interal fans keep it cool.

Grrrr snarl. Just done it again.

The dongle is smaller

haha I agree 100%. I would much prefer a hardwired connection but alas we've just sold the house so it's a waste of time unless we move.

but alas we've just sold the house so it's a waste of time unless we move.
Sorry.. I may have had a few glasses ;) but I don't understand why selling the house stops you from connecting to the box with wires.....

Also, if you've sold, don't you have to move??

lol, I've had a few glasses as well! I don't want to start messing about lifting carpets etc and risk damaging anything - we are technically caretakers of the house now until we move out.

It's sold but we have until next year to move out - haven't found anywhere to live yet...baaaaaaaaaaaaad time of year but no choice due to wife.

It was the stupid USB cradle. Would you believe it! And to think I never though of trying the damn USB stick direct. Grrrrrr. Angry with myself now - but happy at a constant connection! :D
