Getting back into photography...which lens?

Hi,

I haven't picked up my camera in months due to moving away, starting a new job.

I'm finally starting to settle and finding that I have time to get out with my camera again but I'm looking at a change in Lenses.
My current setup consists of a Gripped 30D with a 17-85 IS and a nifty fifty.

I am looking to consolidate my kit and just use the 30D with a good walk about lens but want it to be on the wide end of things.

I have a budget of about 400-450 for a wide-ish walkabout lens, what is the best lens in this price category?

Cheers

Grant

Canon 15-85 IS

This is about the widest you can go on a walkabout lens, most of them start at 17mm. Anything wider would be a dedicated wide angle.

Personally I'd stick with your 17-85 and get a wide angle as well. Possibly a Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20. Although Tamron and Tokina also have offerings. However I do see the attraction of a do-it-all lens!

If you are considering prime lenses as well, have a look at the excellent Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I used one for just over 2 years and absolutely loved it. Fantastic all rounder and will give you outstanding IQ.
