im trying to use the internet on a 2nd laptop. The main one is connected wirelessly to a router, the 2nd laptop doesnt have wireless. We have a patch cable but it doesnt connect to the internet when I hook them both together.

One machine is vista the other windows 7

I have tried turning on Internet connection sharing on the wired network and I loose the internet on the main laptop and still get nothing on the 2nd.

I have also tried sharing the wireless connection through ICS but still nothing on the 2nd laptop.

What can I do?

You may well need a special crossover type patch cable to get that to work. Other options: usb/pcmcia wifi adapter or a pocket router like this.

Yup - Cross over cable + allow internet sharing on the 'Main' PC.

You 'may' need to set up a small mini network. ie. if your router/modem gateway IP is say 168.192.1.0 - you might need to set your host to XXX.1.1 and your second to XXX.1.2

100% possible, ive dont it in the past, albeit some years ago

as I said I tried turning ICS on, turning it on either doesnt work or stops the main pc having internet.

I've never tried this setup.

Can you confirm what ICS configured your main laptop IP address(es) too, and see if they conflict with your router ..ie 192.168.x.1

USB wifi dongles are dirt cheap now, that would be easiest solution
