Getting the exposure right?

Which metering is the best

Thats just too open a question ... it really depends on what your doing... a bird in flight and a landscape for example would be two totally differenr metering modes.. depends on a few things...

If there was one best metering mode then everyone would use that and no need for the rest :)

Thats true

If you can't see the difference, go out and do some testing....

Assuming you have spot, centre weighted and full frame metering try and understand what those terms mean and how it might be advantageous to use one over the others... hint - each of those is sampling a different amount of what you see through the viewfinder to find out how much light there is....

Oh well thats me confused again. Can you give an example of how each one might be used?

it has partial metering which is about 9% in the centre whereas spot metering is about 3% if I remember correctly... but you can certainly use partial in the same way even if you have to zoom in on something a bit to get it

Of your focusing screen as you look through the viewfinder. If i set mine (40d) on spot metering and use my centre focusing point I can meter from a tiny white flower (for instance) which is filling the spot metering circle. (3% of my screen)

If you were to do the same... your metering circle for partial metering in the centre.. is larger (9% of the screen) so there is a possiblity that as well as the little white flower, there is also an amount of dark green leaves too.

So to be more accurate you could zoom in so just the little white flower filled your partial metering zone on its own and then the exposure would be taken from that... just how it did with my spot metering but I didnt have to zoom in... thats all really. Does that make any sense??
