GF1 Handling compared to 7D - Supposed to be buying a lens!

Yes
I recently sold all my Canon lenses (17-85, 50, Sigma 10-20, 100mm Macro, 55-250) with the intention of having just one lens on my 7D

If you're interested read about it here, here & here

So now I currently have a 7D body and am supposed to be researching which lens to get for it....

....but I keep finding myself looking at reviews, forums posts & prices for the GF1.

I know the 7D is a blazingly fast camera and the GF1 is not going to compete with it - but has anyone got any views on how much slower (shutter lag, autofocus and live view lag) it is compared to a DSLR?

I'm now deciding whether to sell off the last of my canon gear (7D body and Speedlite 580EXII) in favour of the GF1 and 20mm f1.7 pancake

Whilst I intended to spend 2010 'back to basics' with just one general walkabout lens and focus on my photography - I now wonder if half the problem with my lack of photo taking is the 7D, the size & weight of it - plus all the associated gear that you have to hump around.

And so it goes on :bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk:

I had a wander round town today with a 1D but didn't use it as it's really quite conspicuous. Instead I used my LX3 quite a lot though I'd love a GF1.

Depends what shooting you want to do. If you're going back to basics i.e. street stuff, the GF1 is an excellent choice.

this is half the problem for me too.

it's a sad fact that society sees someone with a large camera/lens combo as either a terrorist or a kiddy fidler - i am neither, but feel very uncomfortable 'getting it out' in public.

i ditched my 'compact camera' a while back due to it's poor performance compared to my dslr - i don't want to get one and then find the GF1 sluggish & cumbersome

i have missed numerous photo taking oppurtunities due to leaving the dslr at home

i don't really have a preferred subject matter, i just like taking pics of anything & everything

The one I've used was very quick to operate and focused very fast. Certainly I'd call it "snappy".

I am always out with the camera, taking pictures of anything I fancy. I always have the 80-200 on the camera. I couldn't care less what people think of me. If they have an issue they can approach me and talk to me. If you don't get over the fear of bringing your brick sized camera out then you are going to get very frustrated with yourself.

As for the topic, LL has said that the GF1 is the snappiest of all ILC cameras.

I keep thinking about trading my Evo FQ-360 in for something less conspicuous. Perhaps a Mondeo or one of those dull 3-Series. Then I sober up and realise I will miss the performance, even if it does attract unwanted attention.

The responsiveness isn't really an issue, you can forget that it's a digital "compact" camera and just get on with shooting. Get the 20mm f1.7 lens and I'll be surprised if you regret it.

Best thing for you to do is go have a play in a shop and see if it is 'snappy' enough for you. I have had the 40d and 450d and the GF1 as far as i'm concerned is just as fast as those Canons. I certainly use my GF1 more than the Canons.

sold my 7D & 17-40L & bought a GF1 with 14-45mm 45-200mm & 20mm pancake..& i don't regret it at all....the GF1 is a stunning camera you can use anywhere anytime

If you are looking for a camera for street photography then it would serve you well.
I would not get one though in place of my 7D for birding so it is all about the use the camera is going to get.

Seriously considering selling the 7D and going with a GF1

I am reading nothing but positive stuff about it

My other option is to mothball the 7D body and use the money I was going to spend on a lens for it - on a GF1

At least if it does turn out to be not for me, I can out it and haven't lost the 7D, or can buy a lens in the future and keep the GF1

Sometimes I wish I indulged in knitting or crosswords instead of photography !!

Gotta decide soon, cos at the moment the 7D paperweight is useless for taking photos !

go for it...& get the 20mm pancake lens cause it's a little beauty

I love my GF1 but I'm not yet convinced it is a replacement for my 50D. Having said that, I took the GF1 to Glasgow today and snapped away in the street, not one person gave me a second glance and for that reason alone it is a camera worth having.

I'm going to take the GF1 to the Far East for 3 weeks later this year and save my back, if it measures-up, I'll be selling my Canon gear when I get back.

I am a FOOL

If only I'd seen the GF1 before selling all my lenses!

I have hatched a recovery plan.....

I had a budget of 1k for a new 'supa dupa walkabout top notch best IQ mega sharp dogs doodah's' lens for my 7D after selling all my lenses.

Then I saw the GF1

So now I could ...

Keep the 7D
Buy another 17-85 for it (best of the 'cheaper' canon walkabout lens)
Buy a GF1

And still have £1-200 left over for some GF1 goodies

Plus I will have the best of both worlds

If only I'd thought of that before selling my 17-85 last week :bang:
