GH2 or G3 and AF

I used to own a G1, which was ideal for me, apart from the very slow auto focus, which meant that taking images of birds in flight was nigh on impossible.
I moved on to a Nikon D5100, which I love, but with my Rheumatoid Arthritis, I am finding it increasingly heavier to carry on a bad day.
I like to take images of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and landscapes.
I have been reading reviews of both the G3 and the GH2, and the speed of the AF, but will it be good enough for birds in flight?
I would be looking at getting a 100-300mm lens eventually as well.
If anyone could offer me any advice I would be very grateful.

Hi Marcia,

I have just gone from a G3 to a GH2.

The G3 is a fabulous 'little' camera, and gives teriffic IQ.
Controls I found, small and fiddly and there is no eye sensor to automatically switch from the EVF to the LCD and back, this used to drive me mad.

The GH2 is a larger camera with larger controls and an eye sensor, terrific.

The 100-300 is highly rated but how it handles birds in flight I can't say.

Hi there - I recently sold my entire gh2 kit 100-300 14-140 20mm 1.7 metz the whole 'shooting' match and bought a d5100 !! I was never really happy with the IQ from the 4/3 format :thumbsdown: Maybe it was my technique , i don't know , the 5100 is not a great deal larger than the gh2 (sticks out a bit more i suppose) sure it is a bit bigger http://camerasize.com/compare/#162,166 but the iq from the Nikon IMHO is a whole lot better . if you go to

I really do like my D5100, but the weight is my main problem, rather than the size.
Photography is such a minefield isn't it!!
Enjoy your D5100. It really is a great camera!
 
My husband has suggested the Olympus OM-D E-M5!!
It does look rather superb, but also probably too pricey too!! But a girl can dream! ;)
 
Nikon V1

...Proper PDAF and SLR lens compatibility. I shoot at full AF speed with an 800mm f/4 angle of view, switching between viewfinder and rear screen, in RAW. Then, when I just need 27-300mm walkarounds, I use the twin kit lenses and the lot fits in the bag space taken up by an SLR body without a lens.

The downsides are silly Auto ISO modes which I no longer use, and the price. Still, try and set up an 800mm f/4 with phase detect AF on an SLR system and see how much that might cost..

The V1 is criminally underrated
