'Gift' CONTAX RTS II Quartz -- troubles

Hi all -- I was GIVEN a 1982 Contax RTS II Quartz with a Yashica FR1, several Yashica / Contax fit lenses, two flashes, various Contax and Yashica winders and cables -- I have had a look at the Butkus site for the CONTAX instruction manual -- there is one control I'm not sure about -- the 'Exposure Preview Switch Lever' does it have to have the white line at the SIDE or in VERTICAL posistion when using 'Auto' exposure as some Agfa APX 25 I tried came out with very varied exposures, some two stop OVER and some about one stop UNDER -Exposed --- also. I used a RED Filter on some and they were 'thin' -- I thought the Contax exposure system would allow for the filter density , -- the camera was EXPENSIVE enough when i came out !
Also one Contax flash , the small one, went BANG ans smelt burnming so I dumped it but I still have the large Professional Contax Real Time 540 unit with loads of cables and power pack but NO instructions and I'm not sure how to fit any batteries to make it work -- any CONTAX users on this site please ( PS : should stick to Pentax ----)
