Gigapan Imaging System

Strikes me that this is how all the photo's used in the CSI drama series are taken - allows them to zoom in an resolve incredible detail on every shot ;)

More seriously, I suppose it may optimise the number of shots you take, but the auto stitching of PS and other tools today make then pretty good at pulling together even hand held shots, so I'm not sure the mount itself is a must have.

I agree Furtim - this gadget is a shortcut to something that PS can do anyway. So I would think this is Downapan now ;)

As is digital camera itself, zoom lenses and pretty much all modern photography gear - just new ways of doing things we've always been able to do.

It creates pretty cool images I know I was impressed when I saw the obama one and I wouldn't be suprised if early adopters made some good money from it - the big version is $449 which isn't that much - I'd love to have a go at building one of these to support big DSLRs with some decent glass, perhaps adding a couple of passes too so that images can be stacked for super clarity - now theres a project for the summer :D

I guess that's true. The point I was making was that it is sold as a new concept whereas it's an expensive alternative to a manual process.

Although ...

Just remind me how getting that long shot accross the other side of a river was possible without a zoom lens? By the time you changed lenses the moment has passed. ;)

Hmm, unless I had my 18-400mm F/1.8 with me I guess I'd be changing lenses either way ;) Lots of things in photography have made things easier, zoom lenses and gigapan included

It's certainly impressive and I spent a while exploring the Obama image although it strikes me as having fairly few applications and the dodgy stitching present on some of the lenses of other photographs (can't help but take a gander at the gear ) shows some of the limitations.
