I have just bought this 3 way head & i cant fit my canon 70-200 lens with tripod ring onto the head,the locking lever on the head gets in the way.anybody else had the same problem?seems strange for a so called professional head.
 
I had something similar with a manfrotto head although I can't remember which one it was.

If I had the 100-400 lens attached to the tripod head then I couldn't pull the QR plate lever back IF I was using a battery grip on a 40D or a 1D series body as the lever would 'meet' the camera body.

I had to quickly loosen the lens tripod ring and twist the camera body to portrait to give me room to pull the QR lever back. It only took a second but did annoy me a bit.

Which head is it Gary?

I use a MH 5001 and it is fine. My previous head was a Vanguard PH32 on a Vanguard Alta Pro tripod and with that one I could not use a pro body or my 5D2 with a battery grip because of the same issue with the locking lever being in the way. That was why I bought the 5001 instead which is mounted on a Manfrotto Neotec tripod.
 
Hi it is the mh 5001.i have a cannon 60d with battery grip & with the 70-200 fitted with tripod ring i cant even turn camera to portrait orientation.i have tried the quick release plate allways but not even close to fitting.am i missing something here.i phoned giottos helpline & the women on the the phone didnt even know what a tripod ring was.

I've just tried it out with a 100-400 on a tripod ring and my 1D4 and it's fine in portrait orientation..........

Just to be clear. In any orientation, the locking lever has around a 3mm clearance from the battery grip so all should be well. I'm a little puzzled at your problem :thinking:

Are you able to post a picture?
 
Hi houston,i have tried everything i can think of,put the tripod ring both ways round,it is not even close to fitting.i am starting to think it maybe the tripod ring,not genuine canon,bought off fleabay,maybe not the same size as genuine?

I had a look at the tripod rings for the 100-400 and 70-200. They are the same [ OEM ref Tripod Mount Ring B(W) ] and the mounting thread for the QR plate should be 3cm from the rear edge of the ring itself by which I mean the edge closest to the camera.

Which QR plate are you using? It should be the MH642 which will allow you to locate the mounting point a further ( approx ) 2cm by sliding along it's groove thus giving you more clearance for the battery grip.
