Giottos Ball Heads

Hi

About time I treated myself to a decent tripod- been making do with an old sturdy video one.

Anyway, can't seem to find a better tripod for the money than the mtl8360b but was looking to pair with a ball head (a three way may be more appropriate but the giottos ball heads look like they would handle landscapes without too much hassle)

Regarding the giottos ball heads - I did read somewhere on here that the series II crept with a load that seemed to be well under the max load so wondering if any one has any opinions on this?
The two I was looking at are the 1301-652 and the 1300-652? If there was an alternative make for approx same cost/ features then would consider. It was really if people thought that the ball heads would creep when doing long exposures?

I generally use the MH 7001 ball head although I do have one of the friction locked one as well. The 7001 is easy to use, is pretty sturdy and certainly hasn't slipped when I've been using it.

Hope that helps,
Si

I have a MH1302-652 series II arriving today so I will test it and let you know how I get on. From the reviews I read there was nothing said about slipping under load, a few even said the head held firm even with longer telephoto lenses mounted to it.

I have the MH1300-621.

I have it coupled to a Manfrotto tripod. I intitially set out to purchase a Manfrotto head too, but when I had a play around with the Giottos ball head I decided to go for it.

The extra friction adjustment does work as it says, and is a good addition. I have noticed no creeping when using a 300mm f4 and 70-200mm f2.8.

Hope that helps.

It would be interesting to see what your views on it are. I was suprised when I read the comment too- it may have been a manufacturing flaw with the specific example. It was this thread

Thanks for all the replies- sounds like they are good ball heads and maybe was a one off as no one else has experienced creeping.

I was out with my new Giottos last night and never experienced any slip. My longest shutter was 18 minutes, no problems at all. Just make sure all the right bits are tightened

Nice one, thanks for the update. Think I'll order one and the mtl8360b- I love my credit card:lol:
