I Guys,

If you are thinking of purchasing a Giottos MH700 ball head with the 652 quick release plate please be aware of the following:

I purchased first from Amazon, this was reported as faulty and they sent me another. This was also faulty.
After a conversation with Amazon CS they said after getting the others checked they all do the same!!! So it would be a waste of time sending me another.

They also said they are discussing whether to remove the product from their website.

I have also contacted Giottos Uk And sent a link to YouTube, which they are not happy about.

Yes, I have similar, you are supposed to push the lever closed NOT just let it flick back, you PRESS it closed until it clicks, I use that 5001s

A poor workman ..........

Definately poor QC.

Makes no difference if you push it back or let it click back. It still does not work.
 
Hi Matt, thanks for the warning and having seen your video went and tried the two I own

Admitedly they were not bought with the ballhead, but they are same quick release mechanism and plate

Gave them a good hard test and I cannot replicate the problem on either of mine, they are both marked 2009. In fact I dropped one when I was testing just now, it landed on the lever and still didn't budge.

Not disputing your findings at all, but does seem very strange, are you siting the plate correctly with the small pin (sure you are, but its the only thing I can see that would affect the operation of the safety catch)

Thanks for posting.

I would just like to make it clear that I do know how these operate I have another tripod with the same head and it also seems ok.

It's not the fact that I do not know how to attach a quick release plate.

I am guessing a bad batch have slipped through the quality control and just wanted to warn everyone to check theirs are ok and be careful when buying this product.

I have a MH1311 ballhead, bought from Amazon a couple of months ago. It has the same quick-release plate, but it locks very securely.

Absolutely lost all faith in Giottos.

After having been sent x2 Faulty Giottos Heads, I finally got a replacement sent out in time for Christmas.

It was screwed on to the Monopod and just nipped up tight and the thread sheared straight off :(

Before anyone says I over tightened it I am a mechanic by trade and definitely did not over tighten it.

It's because a the thread is a spring loaded hollow shell thread.

Just email Giottos Again!!

Not impressed.
