Gitzo 1541T ground set

I know you can remove the centre column on the 1541 and replace it with the "ground set" to get close to the ground. But (1) I've lost the instructions and (2) I don't have any spare bits.

Do I need a spare bit to convert to not using the column? What does it look like? (it might, err, be in my box of bits.....).
 
You can just remove the column on my Gitzos, unscrew the top plate from the column, then unscrew the hook from the bottom of the column.

Now put the top plate on top of the tripod, and screw the hook into the bottom of the plate, then adjust / tighten the locking collar that usually secures the column.

When I unscrew the bottom I get a tube with a female thread. The thread at the top of the centre column doesn't want to come off. I'm wondering if in the initial tool kit there was a spare threaded rod that would fasten the tube to the top plate.

I have never known there to be extra bits, it has always been a case of adapting the column, by unscrewing it.

However you have the T version which may be slightly different, have you tried e-mailing them to see if they can send a .pdf of the instructions.
