Doh! Numbnuts here has just discovered the adjustment screws (nuts actually) on the Gitzo Explorer 2227 tripod. They're right at the top of the legs, but behind tucked out of sight. Turn the tripodo upside down to see them and get at them. You need a small socket spanner to fit the nuts.
Take it easy - one 1/4 turn at a time and check the leg for tightness after each turn... don't go mad and strip any threads. It makes a huge difference, especially with the legs fully splayed to get down low. If your Gitzo has fully splaying legs then it probably has this adjustment, so check it out.
