I would like to get a Gitzo carbon fibre tripod that would match effectively with a couple of heads as follows:

......... with a Manfrotto 488RCO head (that I already have) to be used for landscape work

............ with a Kirk King Cobra gimbal used with a Canon 100-400 for wildlife work and with a view to being used with a Canon 500 f4 in the future

I wont be trekking up mountains too often.

I know there are alternatives to Gitzo but I fancy a Gitzo and as I have the funds, I'd like to treat myself .

Your recommendations would be much appreciated and I thank you in advance for your advice

I'm fortunate enough to have a Gitzo GT3540XLS but use it either with a 300mm f2.8 L IS or 17-40mm f4L for landscape shots.

I have decided that a centre column should be avoided, especially with long lens

No centre column here either....can't imagine that enough stability would be maintained with one.

I use a Gitzo 1348mk2 and a Gitzo 5530.

I would say any of the series 3 or 5 range would suite you, but choose the correct one for your height and other circumstances.

Thanks for your replies guys... I'm getting my head around this step up to a decent tripod. No centre column and I'm going for the 3541XLS coz I'm tall.

At the risk of harping on, do I need anything else peculiar to a Gitzo set up apart from a bag and carry strap to make it plug and play and ready to go?

Thanks again for your help

nope pretty much all tripod heads will fit pretty much all tripods, unless its one of the very small list that have different thread sizes lol

I use 3540LS (no centre column) as well, and its the same as the 1348MK2 that Mark uses above as well :) should be ample really, and im 6foot 1ish and its tall enough for me with a gimbal head on !

GT3531S (no column) here but I am a short arse :D

Your option is either the 3541XLS or 3531XLS, the former has 4 leg sections, the latter has 3 leg sections, from memory the 3 leg section ones are a touch lighter.

I use a Manfrotto 475B, the centre column can be handy if a quick height adjustment is needed,I don`t use the column a lot, but it is there if I need it.

The other thing to remember with gitzo is its a modular system so if in 6 months time you wish you had got a centre column, you can buy one to fit, its just a matter of taking the top plate off.
