I have a friend from work who needs a portfolio done, she has modelled before, but an agency has requested a portfolio.

She lives in County Durham and has asked me to ask on here if theres anyone who could do this for her. The agency has quoted her £250 to do it but she wanted to know if it could be done for less?

cheers

Bit far north for me, but I'm sure she could find someone for less than £250 without too much trouble.

Threads like this make me chuckle.
You look on other threads, wedding tog wanted for instance and a load will say ill do it for peanuts, and wedding togs saying how wrong it is, yet this seems ok?
£250 for a portfollio and a togs days work doesn't seem too bad to me.
Maybe I'm wrong!

I'm not commenting as to whether it's right or wrong, only that she could find someone for less. I'd also suggest wedding photography is harder (or if not harder, then more stressful) than glamour photography...

That may be right but why accept the agency's togger?? why shouldnt she look for a better deal?
if this kind of thread makes you chuckle i suggest you get out more

Generally the agency tog should be a pretty good deal, they'll most likely have reduced their rates for the agency as it's a fairly regular gig and be up to speed on the kind of shots the agency is currently looking for. It could be a risk going elsewhere because the agency might say the shots you get aren't what their market is currently looking for. I would think it's at least worth speaking with the agency to get some guidelines on what's hot and not at the moment before booking another tog.

Spend a day trying to organise/photograph your average wedding mayhem or a day taking shots of a good looking woman.

It's a tough choice...

I thought any decent agency would arrange for a portfolio at their own expense. I think potential models have to be wary of paying upfront for a portfolio.

Sounds about spot on to me :)

I would think the agency adds a few pennies to their togs fee for themselves.

Some agencies will arrange book shots for models they've got signed but not so much in the glamour industry and very very rarely for unsigned models without a book. TFP is usually the best way for models to get shots but as I said above getting the right shots to sell the model and TFP don't go hand in hand. TFP might produce some useful shots but remember the photographer will also have his own agenda.

Thats a very good point.

I agree. My first thought was, that its another way of a not so reputable agency to fleece the unknowing public of money. If you have good photos taken by a professional you can't go wrong. Andy Lesauvage charges £150 for a shoot, probably only about an hour of his time, but he is one of the best in the business.

thats the link. Jason Cole on TP is good, but this guy in my opinion is the best. If an agency turned down his pictures, then the agency are not worth being with.

£150 for a headshot but NO pictures. £225 for a full shoot then £20 per image, I reckon that would work out much more than £250.

iv known a few models and they all have been told the same thing as the OP said..

And £250 is cheap, for London at least!! my Niece had a book of about 15 pictures done and the whole thing including the book was £500!!

Some of the big Glamour togs will charge upwards of £1000..

As PXL8 said, i think she would be better off going to the tog the agency recomonded.. they will know what the market is looking for.. it changes all the time and if your not actually working in it you may not hit the mark.. im not saying that she wont get good shots! i do TFP and i think iv done some good work.. but is it what the agencies want? i doubt it!! lol..

Good luck anyway, dont forget when she has her cd of images she needs to get a good book and have them printed out at a high quality printers.. they gotta look good.. job can be gained and lost on the book alone!!

Thanks for all the advice guys, all will be passed on to her.

Oh well, eight days on and no reply. Would have been nice if she'd even said thanks but no thanks.....

i could do it from my living room :) would i reach with a 400mm lens :'(
a nurse, glamour, :naughty: i shall ban myself from this thread.

Regards Mark ...my back hurts nurse!!!!

It can be done cheaper if the photographer himself is looking for practise. Generally a model is £50.00 per hour and then he pays for the release of the work so he owns it. However if they both enter into an agreement where they can both use the work in their portfolio then you will save yourself the £250.00. As your 300 miles away then unfortunately unless you visit then I wont be able to do anything.

Hi
I've been in the modelling business professionally for 30 years now. Any decent agency can tell if a girl is right for their books by a cheap family snapshot and an interview. If they are charging for a portfolio they are not good. Decent agencies do not charge. You really need to be very wary. Your friend should look elsewhere.
