Help !!!

So I've got my 550d and even read the manual as well as some posts on here so I'm almost ready to press the shutter button !

So what lens should I stick on the end to add to my kit lens? I've got a little 11 month old boy to capture as well as the other general stuff, potraits, wildlife etc.

Don't want to spend a fortune yet so was thinking 50mm 1.8 and 50mm-250mm is (or is it 200mm I forget!). So say a budget of £500. Anyone out there with any other recomendations? Thanks, Davie
 
50mm 1.8 is a cracking lens so would defo add that on the list.

Another option depending on what else you enjoy shooting would be the Canon 70-300mm IS USM, within your budget with the nifty fifty, good range and a cracker of a lens.

It does very much depend on what else you'll be shooting though, if your shooting landscapes & cloe ups a Sigma 10-20 may be more suitable and a cracking piece of kit :D

What about the Nifty Two Fifty (55-250mm IS) Flickr has loads of very impressive images from this lens. How does it compare to 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS?
 
when i was reaing the reviews for the 550d a few of them said to get the best from the camera you will need some better glass
i would like to get sometime later in the year the canon 70-200 f/4 and also the canon 17-55 f/2.8 both of which re in the for sale section now :bonk:
but until then i will carry on with what i have and the above mentioned lens is pretty good for the cost

You might also consider a flash for indoor shots, birthday parties etc. Bouncing an external flash off the ceiling will give much better results than the pop-up.

As for lenses i'm not sure, the 50/1.8 is going to be good for some portraits if you can get you son to keep fairly still but the fixed length means its not great for unpredicable situations (ie him running about or something) Possibly a flash and the canon 70-200 f/4L would be a good combo given that the kit lenses main weakness is low light.

Oh and "almost ready to press the shutter button" ?! get on with it! what'd you buy it for after all?

Yes I read in a magazine (dont remeber which it was in Belfast airport and I had an hour to kill) that the reviewer was disapointed until he stuck on his better lenses and was then very impressed. Of course I cant afford such nice stuff at the mo!

Terry - that looks a good shot to my untrained eye - with the 55-250 I presume? I like the idea of the 70-200 f4L but was asuming I'd need a tripod which aint gonna happen to be honest. Anyone experience of using the 70-200f4L hand held with the 550d? Impressed? Or should I go down the IS route ( my gut instinct)

It's best to know what you'll be taking pictures of, but I'll bet there'll be plenty of pics of your son so I'll be another to suggest a flash and a better lens for the low light stuff - the nifty fifty might just fit that bill.

the 50-250IS seems to get good reviews and you may be able to pick up a 70-200 f4 at a good price which would be even better.

yes david that is with the 55-250 hand held and at the maximum 250mm then cropped a bit as well
 
Have the 70-200 L F4 non IS, used it on my 350, my 40's and most recent the 7D, have never wished I had IS, and have never used it on a Tripod, it is very capable handheld.

Gonna go for 50mm prime, the 70-200 f4l non is or the 55-250 and the sigma 10-20.....well for now I am but I so easily swayed!!!!
 
Thanks Andrew - and I would have a light bag too - which is important given half the time it feels like I'm carrying Joseph too!! Still good training if I ever go large - I see some of the more expensive lens dont come light!
