Hey all!

This is a question for anybody like me who wears glasses.

Recently I have been using my camera for work and now spend a lot more time behind a camera viewfinder. My trouble is that I have a 5d and am getting really miffed at the marks I keep getting on my glasses from the rubber surrounding the viewfinder.

I would hold the camera a cm from my glasses but then I can only see about 3/4 of the shot and end up with wonky horizons, elements missing or half in shot etc etc etc.

Has anybody found a way around this? Or is it a case of saving up to have lasers shot at me?

Thanks guys and gals!

contacts, or use the dioptre correcter on the viewfinder and take your specs off when shooting.

Tried them used them for years and now my eyes dry out too quickly <1hr

Fair point. Have considered this. Its a bit of a pain... plus I need a white stick!

Did you try the all day all night ones ?, they dont dry out the same..

Had the best (and unfortunately most expensive) the focus dailys that you throw away each night. :( really wish I could go back to contacts or indeed afford the laser!

I use to get this with my 350D - so I took off the rubber bit, worked a treat. Dont seem to get the same with my 40D, does anyone else use your camera? I think with the 350D it was because other people used it and got erm....' face grease' on the rubber which transfered onto my glasses, it is only me that uses my 40D so the rubber is 'clean' - that is my theory anyway.

Surely the daily disposables are just like normal lenses but without all the cleaning stuff?

The 24/7's are made of a different material which lets the eye 'breath'. I only need to take
mine out a couple of times a week to give them a quick clean..

Cheers for the suggestion Jimmy!

I think you are right - its either going to have to be take off the rubber bit and risk scratching my lenses...(the ones I wear that is) or do as Alex said and take them off for shooting.

Ahh well... will just have to cut down on my glass lust and save for laser surgery!

I think Jimmy is probably right - I wear specs all the time and don't get this problem.

I've opted for setting up the dioptre adjustment for wearing specs. It's great to set it up for no specs, but as soon as you need adjust any settings on the camera or look at the preview screen you're bolloxed, and I refuse to wear one of them Larry Grayson lanyard thingies. :gag:

OO Rob that sounds good...
Will drop in to opticians and give them a try. Still - we are due to be getting a mortgage soon and the financial implications of contacts are shall we say high when compared to glasses.

Why can laser be offered on the NHS

I own a 5d... I wear glasses... use my camera allot and can honestly say ive never noticed this whatsoever...

I just cant see how it can be such a huge issue for you to go to the lengths people are talking about... and the expense of contacts etc... surely you can just clean your glasses... I do it every day at somepoint anyway...

Sorry if I seem to be making light of you prob... I so just dont get it?

I guess I could say... have you tried the viewfinder extender?

M

Hi Smoothedit, I wear glasses permanently as well, and don't get the issue you refer to. It does sound like grease or cleaning substance being transferred to your glasses though.

Having said all that I still find it a pain having to wear glasses and would love to not have to. Hope you find a resolution.

Cheers for the response mark.

Its not a major gripe - it is just an annoyance and I thought the knowledgebase here might have an awesome solution!

didnt think of a viewfinder extender - will do some more research.

I am just getting annoyed at the amount of time I spend either cleaning or wearing dirty glasses from the camera rubber. I have worn them for 23 years and it may just be a gripe that is getting the better of me!

Thanks for taking the time to reply all - I appreciate it!

Has anyone got the Nikon DK-21M Magnifying Eyecup they could post pics of (attached to a camera) please? or a review, especially in respect of using it with specs.

Well for me it's to do with being able to see properly without looking through that frame ...

My prescription is so strong that they wont do contacts.. so I am stuck with glasses.. setting the diopter doesnt work that well either.. But never had said problem

However as a glasses wearer the best thing I did re photography was to get bifocals.. now I can look through the viewfinder and look at the screen without swapping glasses or taking glasses on or off... A massive difference to my photography :)

I agree with that, although I've swapped now from bifocals to varificals - same difference though.

I've seen a viewfinder extension on a 5D - it makes that huge focusing screen look tiny and barrel distorted.

Cheers CT.

Was just flicking through the very mixed reviews on ebay. Did agree though that it is difficult to see the entire frame without moving your eyes around - hence needing to press right up against the viewfinder and have glasses issues!

Maybe I should switch to clay modeling by feeling?

I couldn't reveal the person who was using a viewfinder extension on his 5D - it wouldn't be right, he might be embarrassed. OK it was digitalfailure. :D
