Going compact - recommendations please

Hi all.
Although I'm giving up togging as a 'full time' hobby, I still want to take good quality images of the kids, holidays etc, and HD video's.
So I'm on the lookout for a decent compact.
Now I know a compact isn't going to take anywhere near as good shots as a DSLR, and I don't expect it too, but I'd like to get as good as I possibly can.

I'm thinking of the Leica V-Lux 30, as it ticks all the boxes.
Although it's very expensive, money (for a change) isn't an issue. I have a big budget to use!

Also considering the Canon G12, but the Leica has a longer zoom range.

Any thoughts?
 
If you can hold on a few week till the X10 reviews start to get published; then do so!
I've a feeling that it's going to be rather good.
Pre-release sample images (the Polish ones) are astonishingly sharp at f2.
 
I have the G11 Andy and it's brilliant. Whatever you buy make sure it is right. Don't sell it again in a couple of weeks.
 
I have a G11 which is a fantastic camera and I would not have any hesitation in recommending it to anyone. However I am also intreagued by the X10 and would wait until these hit the shops before making my decision

I'd guess thats going to be the choice you have to make with pretty much anything, zoom range vs sensor size.

Personally I'd wait and see how the Fuji X10 turns out, that could potentially make the more down from an SLR less painful.

This X10 certainly seems it could be the biz then?
I'll do some digging and check it out. Although it's pretty ugly :D

The NEX-7 is no good. Not really solving the problem I have, as it's actually a DSLR?????
