Going to Egypt... Hire a 10-20mm?

So im off to Egypt for a couple of weeks and will be doing a nile cruise visiting the wonders of Egypt.

Now, my widest lens is a 18-105 kit lens. I will be shooting a Nikon d90.

Looking to get some lovely landscapes and photos of the buildings...

Shall i hire a Sigma 10-20mm? The cost is around £100.... hmmm.
 
have decided that i could use a 10-20mm more than my 35mm 1.8, so have put it up in the trade section to see what i might get... seems silly to spend £100 hiring one, when i could pick up a second hand one for about £200-250....
 
I managed in Egypt with a Tamron 17-50, it was as wide as I needed to go really. Only time I wanted wider was when shooting the pyramids and in some of the temples. Its nice to have the extra width but you can manage without it IMO.

A lens that costs less than £400 to buy new costs £100 to hire for a couple of weeks?!! YRFJ? Daylight f***ing robbery!
 
Keep your eyes open for a good used one, as you say about £250 and assuming you don't drop it in the Nile you could always get your money back when you get home. If your like me though you'll fall in love with the new toy and end up keeping it. :naughty::D
 
buy something second hand and then just sell it upon your return if you need to. I'd suggest the tokina 11-16, it consistently gets better reviews than the sig 10-20 and there's at least one currently for sale on the forums. They will hold their value well so you shouldn't lose out if you choose to sell.

i have not had my sigma 10-20mm for too long, but i am getting to grips with it now, and really finding it a massive step up for landscapes from the 18-55mm kit lens. Whichever way you go about it, i would say it would definately be worth the trouble in getting one.
 
Second hand Tamron's 10-24 is less than 250. Got mine for 230 and another one was sold in here i think for like 200.

It also gives you a few mm of a normal kit so you might even get away with some swaps. I do really like my wide angle photos though so that is me.
 
Thanks for all your thoughts, I like the idea of the siggy, but will do some research on the others, I'm into my lightpaining so the lens would get plenty of use after my holiday :)
 
Well worth buying one if you can get it second hand; they appear on Gumtree for around £250-300 and can always be haggled for. If buying on Gumtree, be sure to check it out in person if at all possible.

Lol... its for 18 days and I included the delivery charge but not from you so will have a look on your site
