I was butterfly hunting this morning when I came across this newly-emerged female Golden-ringed Dragonfly still clinging to the empty nymphal skin. I took these photos over about 3 hours, in between chasing butterflies!

In the first photo she's starting to expand her wings and abdomen:

The wings are now fully expanded:

Now the abdomen has expanded:

She's starting to colour up:

She was very low down in the vegetation in a boggy area, so I was bent double to get the photos, and trying to avoid ending up in the water. I also got loads of midge bites!
It was worth all the discomfort though.

Cheers,

Dave

You've got to wonder how all of that, fitted into that nymph skin.
This is a good little set and a good find.

Excellent stuff. Found my first empty nymph skin yesterday so I'm getting closer - must be wonderful to watch and record

Thanks all! It was a completely chance find, I was so pleased to get the opportunity to photograph it

A stunning sight, and to get to photograph it is brilliant. Exposure is spot on too.
