Good advanced compact to supplement an slr

Looking to buy a good advanced compact camera for when I don't want to use the slr. I have had a look so far and the Nikon P7800 and Canon G16 seem like good and obvious options. But was wondering what else is out there people would recommend and any down falls of the two I have looked at so far. And any example photo's?
 
Both good cameras,I had the nikon p7700 and loved it but they are far from compact.I ended up selling it and got the sony rx100..apart from loss of zoom and articulating screen I didnt miss much and image quality was a step up on the rx100 also. Not to mention the rx100 is tiny and will fit in any pocket,I still regret selling mine and plan on another at some point in the future.Panasonic lx7 is also worth a look if size isnt a major issue,dropped in price now to just over £230 I believe
 
the million dollar question ( or questions ) would be budget and for what usage.
the fuji X series for instance ( X100S fixed lens oustanding camera, the fuji x-e2, mirrorless compact, the fuji x20 fixed compact with 28-112 zoom ) plus several others in the range.
( yep i like fuji, owned the x-e1 and an amazing camera and used the x100s for a while and simply outstanding )
cant comment on the canon or nikon as never tried them.
 
Depends on how compact you want to go.

I wanted a compact that would fit in the pocket, to carry around when I didn't want take the 5D Mklll, and bought the Canon S120.

So far, have been quite impressed with it, and so has the wife, as she keeps nicking it.

If you want something a little bigger, then the G16 enjoys a good reputation, and a mate of mine has one to supplement his DSLR.

Two others I looked at in addition to the ones you mentioned were the Fuji X20 and Sony RX100 mk3. The Sony is considerably more, so depends on your budget, but does have a much bigger sensor. The other thing I was looking for was an eye level viewfinder (optical or otherwise) as I don't like holding the camera at arms length. The G16 has the longer zoom range.

Have decided on the Sony myself, but waiting a while to see if the price settles and to sell something to pay for it.
 
Forgot to add budget, will be up to £400 max. As for use mainly going to be for day out snaps, possible holiday use so will be used from anything of portraits of the kids to landscape shots.
 
I have the P7800. Much prefer it to the X10 I have in terms of handling, and the X-E2 in terms of usability. As stated not the most compact of compacts but a good one.

All photos on here and here were with the P7800.
 
I use a G1X but was considering a G15 when I purchased it. The G15 would have been better at macro, but the bigger sensor of the G1X swayed it for me. I use my 580ex flash on the compact as well, which looks a bit weird but works well.
 
sigma dp if you can live with its weaknesses, and it stomping over your dslr for quality :)
