Hi, new to this forum and having a few nightmares in the search function. Guess its been asked a hundred times but... what is a good all round lens for a Canon EOS 400d. I have the one it came with but have read in several places that its not up to much. Canon 80-200mm £70 on ebay? good buy??? thats kinda my budget. Many thanks,
Martin

Hi Marty, welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay, we are a friendly bunch.

First everybody has an opinion on the kit lens (18-55 non IS version) ranging from excellent to no better than a door stop, I myself find it be to be a really good performer and at the price you won't find anything better, you just have to experiment with it to find what it is capable of.
have a look at this link (it is rather a lot of pages) it will show what others have managed to drag out of this lens.

As for the other lens if it is the EF 80-200mm F4.5-5.6 II, yes it is a good lens, very compact, I have used this lens myself and it does produce good images.

A lot will depend on what your interests are, these 2 lenses will give quite a good range of focal lengths to experiment with. Only after using them for a period of time will you find any limitations they have for your type of photography, then you will have some idea of what will be a more ideal lens for your needs.

Untill that happens use what you have and enjoy it.

John:)

isnt the 80-200mm a rubbish canon lens, i had one that i bought for about £30 and it was rubbish!

link to the lens you;ve seen on ebay will help

the sigma and canon 70-300mm lenses are reasonable for the cash but a teeny bit above your budget, much much better than the 80-200

If you can stretch your budget to £100ish then i would go for a efs55-250is.

Hi Martin, Firstly welcome to the forum.
The Canon EF 80-200 you mention is not going to give your camera the lens it deserves to be honest and it will only be a short time before you are looking for something better.
The EF-S 55-250 IS as mentioned above would give you better pics for just a little more money.

Thanks very much guys, just wanted to get something to help start out, will have a look for the other canon lens that is recommended.

EF-S 55-250 IS Ouch! £200, if anyone knows of a used one let me know, thanks again

Hi again, I have found loads of Tamron AF 70-300mm lens on Ebay in as new condition, all under £100. Is that a good lens to get me started or am I better to splash out the extra cash and get the Canon EF-S 55-250 IS???

Cheers, have ordered the EF-S 55-250 IS from Park cameras, now I will just need to have a play and see what I can do, thanks everyone, will post 1st pics for you all to coment,
Martin
