ok first post so be gental... ;)

Im looking at picking up a Canon 7D - Thats the easy bit.

Is there such thing as a good all round lens?

My main 'subjects' are landscapes & wildlife with abit of motorsport...

Ideally i'd like to spend sub £500 on lenses/lens to start with -

Am i being realistic?

Cheers

what sort of focal length you looking at?

the Canon EF-S 15-85mm is getting good reviews.

Buy with the kit lens and then get a medium telephoto zoom. Around 70- 200mm F2.8 second hand zoom, that should be useful for low light nature shots and the motorsport.

If you're getting a 7D then no point getting anything too "budget" as would limit a very nice camera.

Your description of wildlife and landscape are a bit contradictory, as wildlife implies telephoto and landscape implies wide angle... so are you looking for one lens to do it all or maybe starting a colection ?

The lenses that were released with the 7D (15-85 & 18-135) are supposed to be pretty good, but are neither "very wide" or indeed "very telephoto".

If you want just one lens to start with then one of these is probably a good starting point, and then you may want to consider a "very" wide zoom like a Sigma 10-20mm for the landscape stuff when funds allow.

Are you getting a kit lens with the camera, the 15-85mm would be a good choice and would satisfy the landscape & general purpose requirements.

A good starter lens for the motorsport and wildlife would be the Canon 70-300 IS - although those two lenses will put you over budget (You may get a better deeal if you buy the 7D and a kil lens)

:agree:

I agree. You'd almost certainly be better off with a lesser body (eg 50D, 40D) and spending more on lenses.

I agree too.

Oh, and for future reference it's lens nor lens. :)

I agree in with the lesser body for most normal people... however im not normal!! I just know i wudnt be happy with anything less than a 7d now. ( i know this is daft but its just me) Everytime i missed 'the shot' i would be forever thinking 'id of got that with the 7d'... crazy i know :bang:

tbh just putting down i writing what i actually want has helped. Ive got all these ideas in my head but ive now coming to realise a decent telephoto lens is my main prioritiy.

Thanks for all the suggestions and i alway thought it was lens and not lens (but ive read lens so many times on here..) I sell thermal imaging cameras after all !!!

Cheers

... just a shame that it's not really sharp because I skimped on the glass. :D

I really don't see the point of having a camera with 18 megapixels, unless you have lenses whcih can deliver 18 megapixels to the sensor - and that means spending money on them.

It's true that you do need top glass to get the most out of the 7D's sensor, but there's more to the camera than that - much more. So I agree with the OP. It's really excellent in every way and even if most lenses can't deliver that kind of resolution (you need immaculate shooting technique also) you will still benefit from the high ISO/low noise, excellent AF, fast frame rate, build quality, built-in master flash, HD video etc etc.

The only thing wrong is your budget for lenses. My choice would be Canon 17-55 2.8 and 70-300 IS - £1,100. But if the long end is your priority, get the 70-300 and the 18-55 IS kit lens, them both for around £500, then upgrade the kit lens as and when.

TBH 17-18mm is not really wide enough for landscape but you could get by (try panorma technique to get really wide views) until you can afford a Canon 10-22 (£450?).

Hi & Welcome

The 70-200L F4 lens is a cracker and can be picked up under your budget.

Might be a little short in focal length for wildlife - poss motorsport -> depends which track your going to.

The 70-300IS is a good lens, but might be a bit limiting on the 7D.

Think you'll be looking £500 + for a very good 300mm range (300L prime, 100-400L etc)
