good crop or 2x tc

hi all just wondered what peoples thoughts were on a 2x tc or just do a good crop with software,regarding the final quality, using a d7100 by the way cheers
 
Depends on final use. For shots intended for the web or smallish prints, a crop is probably good enough but for big (A3 or larger), you'll probably need extra length. FWIW, teleconverters rarely add quality and work best with primes, indeed some of Nikon's zooms will not accept their own teleconverters (70-300VR for example).
 
Does the D7100 retain AF at f8 ?

Worth knowing unless you're using f2.8 lenses

Cropping is option of last resort in terms of image quality.

It depends.
Using a TC cuts light causing a higher ISO, reduces max aperture/AF performance (above f/5.6 you'll be down to the center AF point only and AF is always slower with smaller max apertures), your working with a 24MP APS sensor which is very demanding of the lens (TC's always reduce IQ), and you'll have less DOF.

You may very well find that you are better off cropping. But by cropping you reduce the overall performance of the camera sensor (ISO noise etc)

Whilst I agree with most things said by sk66 I don't agree that TC's always reduce IQ. I have used both Canon 1.4 and 2 x TC on canon 70-200L and 100-400L lenses without any adverse impact on IQ. These TC's were designed specifically to match only certain Canon lenses and they do there job very well if used in the right way subject to the other limitations above.
 
I quite often have a 2x (latest version) attached to my 400mm f/2.8, and I own all of the best (latest) Nikon TC's. Obviously I don't think the reduction in IQ is always "adverse," Sometimes the benefit outweighs the penalties. But there is always some reduction in lens IQ; sometimes it can be offset by stopping down further.... I've never seen a TC that didn't (not even the new Canon 200-400 w/ the 1.x4 built in).

The problem with it is more the 24MP APS sensor... it's just too demanding IMO.
 
Love my TC 14 and 17's with my 70-200 F/4. And on my D700. Even in this poorish winter light not had any AF problems. As for IQ no issues here. But then again my 70-200 is sharp.
Just need to get get a 300mm F4 to try them on.
 
The lens you are going to use the teleconverter on will have a bearing on how well it performs. I've yet to get out using a 2tceiii since I purchased one a few weeks ago. I plan to use it on a 300 f2.8 so it gives a max aperture of f5.6. If you are planning on using it with an f4 lens then you will get a max aperture if of f8, just with the d7100s AF capabilities. I have used a 1.4tceII quite alot on a 300 f4 and found it was a great combination. I wrote a blog comparing cropping on a d7100 to using a 1.4tceII, both were using a d7100 and 300 f4, you can read it on my website here, it may give you an idea of what is possible.
