Good everyday/walkabout/travel lens for 550D

I know a single lens which will cover all (well most) of my (very varied) photographic needs probably doesn't exist, or at least if it does it will be a major compromise in terms if IQ.

What though would you recommend as a good everyday lens which will cover most needs without the need for constant lens changing? I'm thinking in the 15-100 ish range (I know that exact one doesn't exist). My budget.... well not totally sure - £400 maybe.

Canon 18-55 - would prefer higher quality and greater range.
Canon 17-85 - I've owned before and never thought too highly of the IQ.
Canon 15-85 - also owned before and stupidly sold. Now maybe a bit above my budget.
Tamron 17-50 - good write-ups but a bit concerned I may need more at the long end.
Sigma 17-70 - not found a review of this one yet

I've also looked at superzooms - Canon 18-200 and the like. Although the one-stop-shop is an attractive option, I worry that I would be disappointed in the results.

Any other suggestions/ones that I've missed? Any experiences, good or bad, which may help my decision making?

Just save a bit longer. We love ours :)
 
Ideally the 15-85,if it had been available when I bought my 24-105 I would have bought one.If thats out of your budget the siggy 17-70 is quite good,I cant speak about the new OS one but I had the old version and it was fine until I contracted 'L' fever.
 
i have gone for the 15-85 on my 60d and so far i am very pleased with it also got the 70-200 f/4 for the extra distance
had the 17-50 tamron a found it a little bit short for me
i have also tried the 18-200 which was a nice lens a bit heavy and suffered a bit of lens creep but nice image quality
i even thought about getting a d90 just for the 18-105 lens which covers my most used range but shelved that idea when a 60d came up

The longest lens you have listed does not go as long as 100mm.

How about an 18-135mm IS?
