Good first lens for my new D90 body ?

Hi all, having just ordered my D90 body, I woul like some advice on which lenses (Nikon or other) that I should buy first to get me started, I will add others when funds allow, and hopefully Santa will bring me another ;).

I will have a look on the far sale forums here to see if I can snap up any bargains :)

What budget are you looking at? And what sort of photography do you do/want to do?
 
You will want the new Nikon 8-500mm f/2.8 then :love: :lol:

J/K, for landscapes, soemthing like the Nikon 17-55 or maybe wider, but the 17-55mm will do the portraits too. For aviation you need at least 300mm really, but the Nikon 70-300VR should cut it for now until you want to splash out on something longer.
You could of course go for the 18-200mm and kill two birds with one stone, but might be a tad short for aviation.

Portraits also look at the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. A must have cheap but spectacular lens.
 
I am not looking to spend much initialy, but I have a few 50mm f/1.8 on my ebay list, as they are cheap but good, I did have a Tamron 70-300 on my last camera and that performed well for avialtion zoom, (although I work up close and personal with aircraft everyday, so I could take hands on photos with any lens.

So the 17-55 may do as a starting point, along with the 50mm f/1.8m then I'll try and get a budget zoom.

18-70 or 16-85

I started with the former, now have the latter. Both are excellent, both are good value, with the latter being a great walkabout lens with that little bit more reach at the long end, and a bit wider. Great for a bit of landscape shooting and good for walking about towns etc on holidays and stuff.

Oh, and a 50mm. I recently purchased my first (f1.8) and love it.
