As above im looking for a the best I can buy for around the £500 mark....I like to take alot of snaps of my kids:)

17 - 55 / 70 - 200 F4 should come in around there. Both are ace portrait lenses and have usm which is useful for tracking moving children!

Depends if you want a prime or a zoom.

If prime look at:

sigma 50 f1.4
or
sigma 85 f1.4 (this is over your price range)

If zoom

canon 17-55 f2.8 again this is over your price range the next best is a tamron 17-50 f2.8

A longer zoom can be good for candid pics try a canon 70-200 f4

What lens do you already have?

hmmm maybe the sigma 50 f1.4 would be of interest for me...im very new to photography so always reading up and taking info in to learn:)

I currently have a standard 18-55mm lens kit...aswell as a tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6

It would be worth using each of your current lenses to find which focal length would be most suitable to the type of shots you want to take, then recommendations would be much easier.

All the lens I have listed will give you a good improvment over your current lens.

Primes offer the best performance but are less flexable.

Try your current 18-55 set to 50mm and dont move the zoom, see if you can get on with a fixed length. If you are happy with a fixed 50mm go for a prime.

The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is a very good lens, fast glass and great sharp images best of all is very cheap too.

For your £500

you could get a mint 2nd hand tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a canon 50mm f1.4 or maybe if you are lucky a sigma 50 f1.4

I think if I were you I would sell my current lens and buy 2nd hand tamron 17-50 f2.8 and canon 70-200 f4. Then do a bit of saving for a sigma 50mm f1.4. this is will improve all you images, but its all down to choice.

If f/2.5 isnt too slow (its not for me!) then the often overlooked and forgotten Canon 50mm f/2.5 Macro is supposed to be one of the sharpest things you can put in front of a camera.

Canon 85mm f/1.8 cant be beaten, especially for the price, and me? I'm a fan of the 35mm f/2.

cheers again for the advice...im not going to rush a decision anyway so i can make the right choice;)

If you are looking to take shots indoors on a 60D I would be wary of having just a 50mm or just a 80mm lens, as the 50mm would be equivelent to 80mm and the 80mm would be equivelent to 128mm. You may struggle to get everything in when indoors.

I have just bought a Sigma 30mm and so far I am very impressed, this is equivelent to a 50mm lens on FF. I did also consider the 35mm F2.0, but I wasn't keen on the bokeh from the 5 blade aperture.

If you did buy either the 35mm F2.0 or the 30mm F1.4 with the change you could also get a 50mm F1.8 for a bit of extra bit of extra reach.

For indoors, generally the 85mm is fine with headshots (on crop) but you'll need a bigger room for body shots.

My lens of choice though is always the 35mm f/2.
