Hi all,

Just booked a short break in Pickering with the intention of visiting places such as Goathland, Beckhole, Robin Hoods Bay etc., but wondered if anyone had any other good spots in that area which may be worth a visit for its photographic appeal.

Many thanks in advance.

north yorkshire moors...anywhere up there is great... as i am now to this neck of the woods don't know many place names. but the N.york moors visitor center has some good walks and great landscape photo ops...

Someone will be alon soon enough and correct me if i am wrong.

oh and sands end is also a nice quite little town

Richmond is also very nice

All along the coast depending on how far you want to travel... robin hood's, saltwick, whitby, sandsend, port mulgrave, runswick bay... etc. Obviously NYMR. Are you after landscape, or 'places of interest' with more for the family too?

I personally could spend the rest of my life on the coast.

Thanks for all the info so far guys. re:

Agree with the sentiment its great up there. I will have family with me and plan to do some walking so 'places of interest' that are great photo opps is what I am looking for.

Thanks again

Was around and about round here at the weekend. A few ideas would be Rosedale, great shots up at the old ironworks, on the chimney bank road. Hutton le Hole is very pretty, better during the week when not so many tourists about. Also maybe some time round Dalby forrest which also has a good visitor centre.

Eden Camp if you like Second WW history.

Isnt there a large mountain bike centre in the Dalby forest?

We stayed near Pickering for a week earlier this year, having never before been on holiday to that part of the country.

If the weather is good you will have no trouble finding places to take photographs, in fact the problem will be deciding what to leave out!!

Whitby and Rivealux (?sp) Abbey were the highlights for me. And the drive from Pickering to Whitby.

Have a look on the BBC iPlayer to see if Richard Wilsons drive round Yorkshire is still available.

We had one really bad day and took a trip to the National Railway Museum in York, get there early, park in their car park (£7 all day - BUT the museum is free). Would have take a lot more photos were it not for having to keep an eye on our 4 year old :suspect:

If you are driving I would suggest a visit to Wensleydale.
Two places worth a visit are Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle.
It's been a very long time since I was last in the Dales and there other places that I forget the name of.

too be honest , get in the car and drive anywhere , you will find something of interest pretty much everywhere

Also, you have Sutton Bank near Helmsley for walks and views over the Vale of York.

Rievaulx Abbey near Sutton Bank is stunning.

You have Fountains Abbey and the Studley Royal estate (Deer Park) near Ripon. Another stunning abbey ruin, but also has excellent walks around the gardens or the 7 bridges in the grounds.

Brimham Rocks near Harrogate - Lots of rock formations for the kids to clamber over (or at least we did before the days of "Cotton Wool" (as in wrapped in) arrived.

Castle Howard and Benningborough are big stately homes between Pickering and York, both with gardens to walk around if that floats your boat so to speak.

Eden Camp as mentioned is an old POW camp that is now a WWII museum with lots to keep you "occupied"

You also have the York Air museum at Elvington (SE side of York) that is great for kids and adults alike.

If there's events on during your stay you have York Drag Way (Raceway) near Melbourne for drag racing and Croft circuit near Darlington for racing.

Have fun.

A couple of miles walk ( at the most) out of Goathland there is a little place called Darnholm where I have been lots of times. There is a river there, with rocks in, that older kids and labradors can play in ( Health and Safety dont seem to have found it yet). There are views of the North York Moors railway steam trains going over a bridge and a hill that keen togs climb up to get a better shot. I once saw and photographed an adder there so be aware.

A few miles outside Whitby at a place called Sneaton that has a farm making icecream which is absolutely yummy and your kids will probably love their icecream sundaes. I did :naughty:You could take pictures of them eating them.:)

Whitby is very photogenic and sells nice fish and chips.

We stay on a farm near Pickering ( very reasonable and lots of animals) for a short break at least once a year

Have a good time

The places you mention are in the Yorkshire Dales and is quite a distance from the North York Moors where the OP is going.

We visit the Yorkshire Dales a lot and I have to agree its a lovely place and if its been a while since you last went, you should treat yorself to a visit soon.

A total gem: Hayburn Wike..... A former railway stop off in victorian times... Great pub at the start....bit of a walk but worth it, trust me!..... Pub is even better on the way back!
Photo genic 100%

Thank MBH..... for reminding me.

............for a pint of Theakstons

Hell Yeah! If you're in the Lake District, try a pint in the Stickle Inn at the foot of the Langdale Pikes....
Black Sheep is rather good as well - particularly in Pately Bridge - handy for Brimham Rocks!

Farndale is close to Rosedale and for me a far prettier dale too, try and do both, if you go to Lastingham have a look in the church, theres a crypt one of only two in England, but not really suitable for young children having some steep steps and pretty dimly lit too, but will only take you 5 minutes for a quick visit.

Never knew about the crypt. Next trip up there I will check this out.
