after alot of friend making at my local camera club, i have been given a sigma 70-300mm af film lens in a minolta fit, which fits my camera as they had been given it from someone else and they didnt even have a slr themselves

just goes to show that if your kind and helpfull, good things will come......

(am i right in thinking this will be a 600mm lens on my digital slr...)

It will still be a 70-300mm lens but if your camera has an APS size sensor, it will behave the same way as a 105-450mm lens does on a 35mm SLR or full frame DSLR.

i still cant beleive the generosity of him, it came with a lens hood, lens cap rear cap and all in a hard sigma branded black case. its mint with not a mark on it. i said id give him some money for it and he wouldnt have it.

The only difference in lens is modern technologies in coatings and better computer designing them.
As for digital lens; it is to do with the smaller sensors and how the lens fits the camera i.e. more inside the lens mount then 35 mm film or ff sensors, what are digital any how

i already have, they are a really helpfull and great bunch of people, the past president has been a good mentor and has taken me under his wing in a way of sorts, he is there main portraits guy and does a studio session every now and then with a handfull of club members to which ive put my name down for.
