I need a good CF Tripod to take to Africa with me …… planning to use the Manfrotto 393 Gimbal head with it
so 3 or 4 legs - I suppose I'll have to use the centre column to get a good height

weight is very important because of the baggage allowance

I will probably just take my Nikon 300mm f4 but MAY take the 300mm f2.8VR which weighs 3kgs so plus TC and camera body - 5kg would be the max

Gitzo seems very expensive - I have had good use from Manfrotto in the past ……… any suggestion based on your experience

or do you think that the Gitzo GM5541 Monopod is a better bet

Gitzo 3542LS will be the best for that set up, but may be able to get away with a 2-series.

Once you have legs sorted you will need to invest in a decent head - I have an Acratech GV2 and it's a brilliant head, although expensive at £300.

Thanks David

Gitzo 3542LS = £645

I mainly use Manfrotto (and a bit of Gitzo) gear but my preferred tripod at the moment (and has been for a couple of years) is the Velbon GEO E640L (with a Manfrotto geared head) - it's light and affordable (so no great stress if I had to replace it)

Buy right, buy once.
