The fewer the number of sections the better.
A larger number of sections will make the tripod shorter when folded but there are more joints that can flex and the lower sections are thinner so more prone to flex and ringing.
I use the 5541LS and its big. Very tall and very very sturdy. My model is the one before the 5542LS. Unless you can get it under £500 then go for the one i mentioned in post 1. Either way you cant go wrong with either.
To echo other comments you cannot go wrong with a Gitzo. Mine is the carbon fibre 3541LS. It's light and I have the long legged version (LS) which is a boon if you are tall and/or have a bad back. From memory the 5 series was heavier so I wanted something lighter if I was lugging it about.
Worth checking supplier stocks for ex-demo units and nearly new for a decent saving on new price.
