Yes
i am interested in a couple of flash guns.
the nikon sb-600 and metz af48.
ease of use is a must (for now!)
metz appears to have better spec and is cheaper.
any views/ advice appreicated:)

SB600 is great. Dead easy to use and works wireless for off-camera work.

You might pick up a used SB800 (even better) for less than £200 and why not have a look at the SB80DX, one of Nikon's first digital flashes.

The much older SB26 and SB28 both work with modern DSLRs (but not in iTTL) and they're less than £100 for mint used examples.

"SB600 is great. Dead easy to use and works wireless for off-camera work."

is this not also true of the metz?
it states wireless (slave) , whatever that means

Yes and the Metz certainly does look as if it beats the SB-600 in a number of areas......

Consider the Nikon SB400 very cheap & very easy to use & small.

i have a SB400 as i dont use flash very much so didnt need one of the big clumsy ones and it been fine for everything i used it for although with some of the higher end lenses it might not be tall enough too shoot over the end of the lens.

"flash guide number" is 30 on nikon but 48 on the metz. seems a big difference can someone explain their meaning?
cheers

See here for explanation... better than I could explain it anyway... :)

Yes, but the whole point of the SB600 and Sb800 is the work as part of Nikon's creative lighting system (CLS) so you can acually controll wireless flash unit throgh the camera's menu system. You may be able to do that wih the Metz but the Nikon will be fully compatible. you just use the built-in, pop-up flash to control the SB600 and you should be able to control the power from the camera without wires. :)

So do these Metz guns work with CLS or not? That AF 58 doesn't half pump out some power for the money, but kind of loses its appeal if not CLS enabled...

*5 mins later* Yes, they work with CLS, so no loss at all for less money plus more power...

I'd love to see a proper review of the Metz guns v Nikon guns and how well Metz integrate with CLS.

From the specs the Metz 48 appears to be an equivalent to SB600 and Metz 58 is equivalentish to SB800/900 including Commander mode. however the only reviews of these guns I have seen consist of someone sticking them on a camera and taking a few shots, then fiddling around with the menus. Be great if someone who has used them in a CLS system along with some nikon guns could do a write up.

They may compare like for like in some ways, but the Metz guns are considerably more powerful and cheaper... like you say, a distinct lack of proper reviews.

Nissin Di622. Full Nikon i-ttl compatible, does all the swivel bounce flash stuff and is under a hundred quid.

aye...but what is it like in a multi flash set up with some SB600s, remotely triggered by say a SB800 or a D300 in commander mode.

Read a couple of reviews and watched some youtube reviews on it - personally I'd def pass on it and go for the Metz or Nikon alternatives...
