Good value wide(ish) lens for Nikon D800

I'm going to the Nurburgring for the 24h event, and I've recently switched to full frame. I do have a couple of wide lenses for my crop cameras but I'd rather stick with just the one camera and travel as light as possible.

Having looked around, I'm struggling to find a good value for money wider lens to go with my 70-200 f2.8. I'm considering renting one, but I figured I'd ask here first what people recommend.

Since it's for motorsports, I'd like something that focuses quickly, and it'd be handy if it was decent in low light too.

Or do I just grin and bare the weight and take my D7100 with 18-35 1.8?! Decisions...
 
I had thought about it, but for half the price the 28mm 1.8 prime would be more tempting I think.
 
The 24-70mm + 70-200mm set up is very versatile and both give great options for traveling and using on your D800 :) The 28mm is a good lens but I would personally go for the 24-70mm if I was you as it covers a good range with superb image quality!
 
Completely agree, and I've heard nothing but great things about that lens in all fairness. I just can't help but feel it's a pretty huge chunk of money for something I wouldn't really use all that much. Considering buying one and then selling it upon my return, price for renting looks pretty hefty.

One other positive for the 28mm 1.8 is that it's only 398g, compared to the 900g for the 24-70.
 
I personally wouldn't look at renting as it is wasted money in all fairness you mite aswell go and buy the 28mm instead of renting, the 24-70mm maybe more of a long term investment also than the 28mm, but its really upto you, the 24-120mm f/4 maybe another option that sits in the middle of them both?
 
If you get the 24-70 odds on you'll use it at either 24 or 70 most of the time, and you already have 70 covered. The 28 is a light thing, and (IME) a surprisingly versatile focal length. A lot depends on your shooting style though.

This had just been mentioned to me by a friend, and it's massively tempting to be fair! I always prefer to get primes where possible and having heard about it being an amazing piece of glass previously I'm massively tempted. Cheers for the tip!

It's one my most used lenses on my d800.
