Can anyone point me towards a reasonably priced 'Walkabout' lens to use with a Canon 1000D.

The above camera comes without a lens so i need to source one. I would very much like a zoom and it has to have IS.

I don't know much about the different lenses. I know i can get a 2nd hand 18-55mm IS, and have asked in the wanted section.

Doesn't have to be a Canon lens, as long as it is a decent one and has IS built in. My budget is £150 max.

Please, only post if you can help. I don't want any remarks concerning my closed 'What camera' thread. That is history! Thanks

i totally agree a s/h 17-85 or 28-135 is if slightly more reach is required...

The 18-55mm IS is pretty good for the money. I'd get one of those for £60ish over the 17-85mm for £150 every single time. Put the rest of that money to something longer, like a 70-200 f4.

the 28-105 f/3.5-f/4.5 is within budget I think. If you prefer wider over longer, then the Canon 18-55 IS is great, and very cheap.

In your budget you could even get the 18-55 IS and a nifty fifty for getting creative.

Thing is if he get's a 28-105 that's not going to give him much at the wide end on a crop body.

Good idea: Used 18-55 £60, Used 50mm f1.8 (awesome lens) £65

Sorted then save for the 55-250 IS!

That 55-250 surprises me every time I nick it of my dad!! Can be very sharp!

Indeed, some people aren't so bothered about the wider end but if he did want a wider end the 18-55 is still there for that.

Still looking for an 18-55 IS for £60. Be nice if i could find one. And a 50mm F1.8 would be superb too, and the 55-250 IS.

Mpb is approx £85 inc delivery for the 18-55mm IS.

28-135 & 28-105 are worth looking at too! Cheers guys.

If you see any 2nd hand let me know!

The link i gave you regarding the 1000d, i think the guy will split so you could get just the lens.

I've got an 18-55 IS that I'm going to put up for sale later this evening with a UV filter attached for £75. I'll try and remember to put a link in this thread when I do.

Why the absolute need for IS?

Just curious. Will you be shooting a lot of subjects/things that don't move at speeds of 1/3 to 1/60 ?

I believe the IS version of the std kit lens is better quality and gives better quality images than the non IS version regardless of the IS.

That is what i have read and i know nowt about lenses. I would much prefer the IS lens.

This months PhotoPlus Mag contains a Std Zoom lens Test which is interesting as the std kit lens does quite well.

Canon EF-S 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM 88%
Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM 93% - Best on Test
Canon EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM 76%
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS 83%
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM 85% - Best Value
Sigma 18-50 f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM 80%
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 XR Di ll VC 79%
Tokina 16-50 f2.8 AT-X DX 86%

As you can see it beat lenses costing over twice as much. Just make sure you get the IS version.

If i can't get hold of the 18-55 IS would it be a wise move to buy a 50mm F1.8 for now? Then, get a 55-250 IS sometime down the road?

Having a single prime lens was the best thing I did in the last year. Made me think about my photography more, made me move about the subject instead of just zooming in. Learned alot just using the prime lens. Glad i've got a mid range zoom now too though but I really enjoyed just using the fixed focal length.

Can pick them up for the Canon for £75 delivered (brand new from Kerso on here)

The nifty is an excellent buy Tony. As Jonathan points out, it really makes you think about composition and offers a quite superb aperture for such a cheap price.

Bloody good lens IMO.

Well, as i can't seem to find a good priced 18-55 IS i may very well opt for the 50mm F1.8

It's a great lens for learning DOF with, very fast, very light. Probably the best value for money lens you can get (unless money is not an issue and you wouldn't notice £1750 leaving your account never mind £75  )

Tony - seriously. Check out the cult like following this awesome lens has and look at the pictures people take with it. Simply stunning.

It will also provide you with an excellent challenge for the first few weeks - get to know your camera by using a prime lens and variable DOF.

Go for it!

If you can't find a 18-55 then as said a 50mm f1.8 would be a great lens to find your feet. Cue joke about pointing camera down to bottom of legs!! :D :D

I think Jessops do them for £95, maybe a bit cheaper? They may price match so have a look round at other shops.

Tony,

I have a Canon EF 28-90mm kit lens left over from my Canon days. Only thing, I can't find a lens cap, but you could pick one up for a couple of quid or so.

It would tide you over until you decide which lens you want to buy, which could go on for many months, and would allow you to shoot some photos till then.

You're very welcome to it for free. If you PM me your address I will post it off to you 1st class so you could have it for Saturday.

Julie

I'd also recommend the nifty fifty. It's amazingly sharp compared to most other cheap lenses, and its always useful for low light and portraits.

To get you started with the wide end a S/H non-IS 18-55mm could be had for £35-40 and sold for as much when you source a reasonably priced IS version (you might make or loose £5 on the deal). There's no doubt that it's not as good as the IS version but it's not terrible either as some would say.

Most importantly it'll get you started rather than waiting and missing photo's if you only had a 50mm. You'll miss the IS for indoor, low-light static objects (like a museum) but not too much for photos with people in as you'll have to keep the shutter relatively high to stop any blur from the subject movement which no amount of IS in the lens will fix.
