Do your images appear in Google image search ?
If so can you give some examples please, I'm looking for examples of images that are found by using a subject name title etc.

Alternatively if you have any advice or tips on how to achieve this successfully I would be very grateful, thanks.
Caroline

hadn't tried with image search before.. but entering KIPAX gave me a lot of results.. mainly from websites where people have done a link to me near the picture and not as I would have thought using the fielename.. so pics with the searchword near it seems to work

Thanks for the reply - that's the easy bit :-)
Assuming that you title and keyword your images, if for example someone was doing a search using google images, would they find your pics ?

I tried using 'accrington stanley football' but as far as I can tell none of your images show up, at least on the first three pages of results. As you have a large number of images presumably you would prefer to be found than not ?

I had never thought of google image search as I say.. just ...didnt :)

The accy stanley ones are on the official accy stanley website so shoudlnt need too much of a search anyways.. the club have the opinion that google doesnt count for much trafic as its an official club website.. people who want to find it will wiht ease.. people who dont want to find it then.....

But am going to make a change to my website for other teams

Yes sometime my images do, normally the ones on flickr. For example a image search for McCain Young Athletes League Finals 2008 and the first two are mine.

Like Kipax if I search whiteflyerphotography I get 3 pages of my images.

Point taken, but for example that pic of the streaker might well be good for sales elsewhere if it turned up in an image search.

I'm fairly new to posting here and don't want to appear contentious raising this question, its a straightforward bit of investigating.

Caroline you raise a good point and indeed have raised my awareness as I say.. I am going to make a change to the pics on www.kipax.com :)

Am currently migrating all my pics away from facebook to my own hosting.. so can make big chnges to the way my pics are published which should help with google

I've found that keywords/metadata within the image isn't searchable by Google, but if you have the keywords near the image, as with Flickr the image is found...

Include relevant text on the page.

When someone once requested an alternative to Google, I found MSN far better for image search and got myself a payment for unlicensed use.

Can you give an example of this please - I'm trying to improve my understanding of this. Do you mean images that have added keywords entered in LR etc ?

Caroline

Basically, all my images have keywords applied in Lightroom, so when I export them they are embedded. If I export straight to Flickr through Lightroom the keywords (exactly the same) are sent to Flickr and displayed outside the image.

To test I used an image that has been online on both Flickr and other websites for over 6 months. I searched for all (then various combinations) of the keywords from Lightroom, the Flickr image was usually first result on Google Image search. The ones from other sites, ie only internal keywords were not found.

Here's some of mine.

Images only available on flickr, no meta data, just tagged in flickr. Doing a search in google for 'Lamborghini deanphoto' will bring up a few of the images.

http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=lamborghini+deanphoto&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&sa=2

Looking at my flickr stats, I can see that my images are being linked too from Google & Yahoo image searches.

Looking at my site stats (last 300 visitors) will bring up search results from Goog et all from the meta data tags on my site.

Hope this helps?

A couple of my avatars pop up on page 1 from a search for "tdodd". Page 2 has a picture of a Kestrel and a crop of the same image, both on Flickr. Page 3 has three images of a flash bracket from postings on POTN and one from TP. The next couple of pages also have content from forums which I've posted but after that there seems to be nothing.

http://images.google.co.uk/images?s...TF-8&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2009-02,GGLJ:en-GB&q=tdodd

I seldom title or keyword my online images, but I do reference them from web forums so I guess the only practical search that would turn up my images is one for my forum user name.

Well, searching for "etchacan", on the first page of 21 images, 13 of them are mine. Searching on my name, 7 out of 21 are mine.

Mostly through Flickr, but a surprising amount from here:)

The problem is if you want to promote images specifically on the image search...

I have several "Snowdon reflection" photos on my website, each keyworded etc...a Google image search using "snowdon reflection" produces 6 of my own shots on the 1st page..2 of which aren't even snowdon and the rest being links to photography forums, none are the ones I've tried to target on my website

The main conclusion I draw from this is that it's mostly about the ranking of the website they're hosted on

All else being equal, it would seem logical to me that a site with more 'authority' would be a more reliable source for the same image hosted on a 'less trusted' domain.

I find the titles used are what brings my images up in google the most frequently and most prominent.

Searching Green finch fledgling 3 of those are mine. Baby goldfish the 9th image is mine. Gold finch fledgling, the first two are mine.

Flickr stats and Google Analytics are a good way of finding out what is hot and not, on your own site and Flickr. I often go through my flickr stats and click through the links to see where they are on the search used. I do the same with Google Analytics for my site search hits.
