I'm starting to get a grip with site map, but whats a google confo file?

When verifying your submitted site you have two methods available to you, one of which (easiest) is to upload an HTML file of a name that is supplied for you by Google. Then it can search for your uploaded file and if it is there then you must have put it there, so you must be the site's owner, and you are then verified.
