Gorillapod for brief trips

Am going to Iceland and San fransisco for work and don't really want to take my redsnapper tripod with me- but have a single day in each place to take pics. Are gorillapods decent enough or would it be a waste of time?? I have a D90 and would likely be using either my 17-55 kit lens or 70-300 nikon (primarily for landscape I imagine!)).

I would take a monopod.. Gorilla pod is ok IF you have something to wrap it around. Often you don't...
 
I took at Gorillapod with me on my last holiday, used on the ground it was a nightmare to use even with a ballhead, lying on the floor to compose the shot, adjusting the legs etc. Sold it straight after and bought a small travel tripod instead.
 
I've used a Gorillapod SLR and nothing else for several years now, always goes with me on trips and holidays (http://chrisharrison.smugmug.com/Travel) as I like to travel light and not keep me missus waiting around for long. It's get used as a mix of wrapping around stuff and as a tripod on the ground...I love that it forces me to shoot from a low angle much of the time.

No issues with mine, still as solid as the day I bought it even though it's been very busy.
 
I have just bought one to take to The Gambia in a few weeks. I expect to use it on the ground most of the time.
 
I assume you want a support for long exposures - a monopod won't be any good for those.
 
How about a monopod + bungie cord to secure it to railings etc if you want long exposures? Not sure if it'd work.
 
Have you looked at the Trek Tech T-pod that I pointed at? I'm sure that would do what you want.
 
I have to echo the comments about gorrilla pods. They are a really neat idea but I have found very few uses for mine with a DSLR. They are great for compacts though.

There is mini manfrotto tripod thing that looks like it could be handy on occasions but again maybe a bit specialist.

I keep looking at these but don't know anyone that has used one.

Gorillapod focus and X ball head work a treat.They are what they are though.If you are bothered about not always having somewhere to put it you have no choice but to take a tripod.
There are some really small CF tripods on the maret now that are very light and easy to carry.My 3XLT folds down to approx 40cm and is very light.Expensive but worth it imo.

Looked at the what weight that these two can hold - the T'pod has a 9lb/4kg load compared to the 1.5kg of the Velbon Ultra MAXi Mini...

So it really depends on how much weight your going to plonk on it really... So in the words of our Graham (as Cilla used to say) The choice is yours...:p
