got my camera - do I need to update firmware etc?

Hello folks.

Today I got my first SLR. It's a second hand Canon 400d, which isn't especially sexy, but the price was good, and I was able to swap the kit lens for the canon f1.8 50mm prime, and so far pictures are looking lovely.


A browse of the internet shows all sorts of additional updates and hacks that have been made to the camera - looks like there is even home-brewed firmware updates.

Does anybody generally keep their camera updated with these, or do you guys take a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" sort of approach?

I wouldn't bother with the hacks unless you really know what you are doing. Just update it with the current "official" firmware, Canon update them to tweak things and fix bugs, the Canon website will have the latest firmware available for download, check yours is not updated already before downloading though.

Not sure I would bother with any hacks unless its giving you something you really need. I have always just stuck to latest firmware from manafacturer.

As above, as a beginner I'd stick to the basics, learn your camera inside out, until the camera starts to limit you, then look into hacks etc.

Update official firmware releases unless the log shows it's just to resolve a problem you aren't experiencing - I would be very wary of 'hacks', sometimes these things go horribly wrong!
