Got my Mac Mini today YAY!

So have you actually started to use the thing yet?
Hurry up, I want to know what you think.

:D I'm a bit busy at the moment doing this and that (and posting on here!!) but I'll have another crack at getting more software on tonight. It should all be done by the end of the weekend. I'm having to share the screen with the PC and i need to make sure i have all the files i need from the PC copied to my external HDD.

From what i have seen so far i think i'm going to love it!!!!!:naughty:

I'll get there!! (y)

I too :love:LOVE:love: 80's music but only electronic synth music like Human League, Ultravox, Visage, Yello, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Devo, Fad Gadget, A Flock oF Seagulls, Freur, Jean Michelle Jarre, John Foxx, Kraftwerk, Logic System, Nash the Slash, OMD, Simple Minds, Soft Cell, Talk Talk, Thomas Dolby, Our Daughters Wedding, Japan, B-Movie, Yellow Majic Orchestra and of course the mighty Gary Numan!

Great days...great days!(y)

You've just listed my iTunes library :D

Plus of course the three classics from the 80's that i really like

Pure - Lightning Seeds
Since Yesterday - Strawberry Switchblade
Electric Dreams

Right........ I am now writing this from my MAC MINI!!! YAY!:woot:

I still have a few things to load but I'm basically there! Everything runs super smooth but i did have alot of problems with iTunes. I thought i could have a separate folder and get iTunes to link to the files without having all the files within the iTunes folder. Oh how wrong was i !!!! It copied all my music files into iTunes and i tried to stop it but mucked it all up. I have been spending most of today deleting copies of tracks and then editing the list :bang: All my fault but i could have done without it. :D

I love the mac keyboard!! So much nicer to type on. The Mini is SO quiet too. All i need to do is get the printers wired up and download a few progs and i should be ready to move the PC to the other side of the office.

Lubly Jubly!!

I like the Mac keyboard too, but the mouse :puke: - gimme my old wireless logitek anyday.

so is this you converted then :)

Have you made you PC redundant now you have tasted the 'fruit'

Not quite dumped the PC yet. I'll probably get everything off of it and sell it if i find no use for it.

I don't like the apple mouse either which is why i went for a Logitech Bluetooth mouse which is the same colour as the mac and keyboard!

1 more day of setting up and i'll be running like a champ! :D

Oh by the way, Firefox is a dream!!!!!

What about 80s computers? I'm flogging off some of the 8 bit machines from my collection :)

Let me know what you have, the condition of it (boxes etc) and how much you want and I might add it to my collection (much to the annoyance of my wife )

So do you have a 1983 Ford Escort XR3i?:LOL: Just to add to the 80 thang!

Amstrads several of each model plus external drives etc, spectrum rubber and pluses, commodore vic20 and c64s one box each in 'good' condition, an amiga a1200 with internal hd and a BBC model b at the moment. Anything and everything for sale to buy glass or swap for glass or other bits. Eg spectrum plus with psu tested and working with cassette lead and a few tapes £15 plus p&p. Other stuff at typical eBay prices without the eBay risks!

If people are interested I will start a thread in for sale section

I was more into the sleeper type cars such as the MG Maestro Turbo. They only ever made 500 or so of them and i owned three of them :)

Here's a a blog on the last one i owned by its previous owner

http://www.maestro.org.uk/maestro/f180seu.php

I used to sell Austin Rover cars back in 86 and one of my fave to drive was an MG Maestro. Brilliant car to drive, really exciting! Never drove the turbo version sadly although i did drive a Montego Turbo back from Ipswich to Kingswood in Surrey. Great car but it broke down with a dodgy alternator on the way back!! Brand new car too!!! not even registered!

Over the last few years i have been building my own sports cars. Here was the last one i did.

Ps. I'm back on the PC at the moment as the Mac is giving me grief!! Can't load the progs i need :bang: I'll keep trying.

Yeah a V8 in one of those is pretty mad. There is a chap building one with a V10 Dodge Viper engine!!!! I have seen the pics and the engine just fits! It's going to be bonkers!

I know someone who built one with a Suzuki Hyabusa engine that had been bored and stroked to 1600cc and about 230bhp but weighing FAR less than any car engine. Now THAT was fast with more power than most Rover V8s

Hmmm,
I still want to put 2 Hyabusa engines in a Mini. The problem is I have a mortgage now.

That has been done to great effect. I Busa engine would see off most cars on the road and be HUGE fun into the bargain!!

It did ! or are you talking about in a mini? If so it would, its cosworth power output without the turbo lag in half the weight..... damn clever those Japanese

In a mini..... you can do ANYTHING in a mini!! :D

In a mini..... you can do ANYTHING in a mini!! :D

I would love to do up a mini like that. Take my time, rip it to pieces down to the bare bolts and do a complete restoration with a monster engine in it. I think you can take the Busa engine to 1.8...... No money for something like that though :)

Heres one i built earlier...

Std engine but full nut and bolt resto. Went really well and looked the Nuts!

sadly finished life like this after I sold it too a friend, biggest mistake ever made and still regret it, my heart and soul went into that car

Nice, I have done this for motorcycles in the past but never done cars. I am much better at welding now though :)

OMG PPP, thats so sad. A mini should never have to end up looking like that! That really is a nasty crash but it will polish out

So far i have had 11 Mini's and i don't think i have seen the last of them!

is that including the mac mini :D

everything going smoothly now andy?

Right..... Having probs with the Mac I'm afraid. I can't load Photoshop 7 and a couple other progs which is a bit of a bummer. I loaded Lightroom 2 and found it annoyingly jerky and that is with it running without any other software in the background. I would have thought 2gig of ram would run LR2 no probs but it's not nice to work with. It's super swift on my PC which has 3gig of ram!

I have sat and had a think and the way the mac is at the moment i much prefer my Winowz PC. The mac does have stuff that i like but don't need and the overall function is nice but no better than the PC. It looks a lot better but that shouldn't be a reason to change. I know many people have had virus probs with PC's and their PC slowing down but to be honest i haven't. My PC (Touch wood) has been fine. It runs everything smoothly no matter how many progs i have open, It has yet to fall over or get infected by a virus. I know where everything is and in my opinion the PC is just as easy to use as a mac.

If i were starting from scratch and needed to purchase the software aswell then i would prob go Mac but the way things are with mine it means going backwards. SO...i'll give it another couple days and if i still feel the same i'll be sending it back before my 14 days are up. It's a shame and i don't want to give it back but theres no point in using something thats worse than what i already have. :(

Light Room should not be jerky at all, it isnt even jerky on my 1.33GHz iBook !! 2Gb should be enough although clearly 4Gb would be better but my ibook has 1.5 anyway.

Can you take your machine to the Apple store and make an appointment with one of the Apple gurus? You are only just starting out with the Mac so it is quite likely some setting or other strange problem.

MacOS feels much smoother than Windows and running CS3 on both (to test Script writer) really shows the Windows machine to be the slow one so something has to be wrong!

Actually thats a plan! I have the week off work so could go in. One prob is that the software i use that i have for the mac isn't exactly erm.....leagal!! if you see what i mean:naughty: I can't take that in and if it doesn't load then i'm stuffed. Would still be worth taking it in though.

Uninstall the software and download the latest versions as TRIAL versions from Adobe. If you are using older versions it is quite possible that there would be an update that you are missing. You cant really blame the computer/software if you are not using the latest update :)

If the trial versions work ok then there is an issue with your dodgy software. You are also leading yourself open to trojan horse routines etc. There is a trojan horse in a version of iLife09 that has been doing the rounds.

Apart from Lightroom, everything else runs ok but if i can't get the software on that i need on there the theres little point in keeping it over the PC which has everything and more! BUT i will take it to the Apple shop at Bluewater and see if theres an issue with the mac and lightroom.

This may be a non starter, I'm sure cowasaki will have the answer.

It sounds to me like LR2 may be running under rosetta. Is there a power pc version of LR2?
CS2 runs "jerkily" here, but I forgive it that because it's not really supposed to run on Intel Macs and it saves me upgrading.
If you somehow (bittorrented?) the wrong version, if there is one? This is what I would expect to happen.
Hopefully the correct (intel) version would work with your current product key.

Andy, if you start up LR2 and then check with activity monitor in the Applications> Utilities folder, the last column should be "kind" and the kind will either be Intel, or PowerPC.

also, when you first load lightroom it will index the pictures in the background- this will take ages if you external HDD.

Also do you have time machine turned on, when this first runs it also can slow things down.
