We're all entitled to our opinion, and I'm not going to diss you for yours :)

but when my skin loses its elasticity, I think the last thing I will be worrying about will be my tattoos... especially as I'll have been living with them for a good 40 years or so by then :D

Your not very good at forward thinking are you..

40 yrs from now you will be living in the present and looking to the future.. the past 40 yrs will mean nothing to you.. you will just be there with your tattoo..

personally i think its great :) what you lose is detail.. not elasticity.. I ahve various tattoos wiht writing on.. 40 yrs later you cant read the writing..but the tats themselves stil look ok (darn't say good) the people telling you how bad it will look in 40 yrs probably wont be looking at it :) so stuff em!
 
Living your life worrying about what will happen in 40 years time may not bring the most enjoyment for the 40 years until you get there...
 
Although the subject isn't to my taste I think the tattoo is fantastic. One of the most lifelike I've ever seen. The tattooist truely is worthy of the title artist. Who cares what it'll look like 40 years from now, maybe it'll look like a grumpy old pug, but if tattooing is your thing then who's to criticise.

The Artist, is Alex Wright of Stonehouse Parlour, Preston Lancashire, and he's open for more work (really wants to do more portraits of people and pets)

I very much live in the now, and I'm not going to spend my now, worry about when.

Right now, I love my dog, I love my tattoo, and even when she's old and grey, or eventually not there at all, I'll always have a part of her.

Thanks for all your comments, positive and negative alike, I'm glad you all took the time to reply, and I'm not going to argue with your opinions as they are exactly that, YOURS. and I'm not going to try and change your mind, all I can tell you is my reasons behind the tattoo, and that I will allways love it..... even when she's a sharpei.

And with regard to what it will look like when your older... I have loads of tattoos and if you ask me, why does it matter to other people what I will look like when i'm old???

When we get older we all look like raisins anyway so what difference does a bit of ink make!

It is a very tidy job. But i think you may regret it later.not 40 years, just about 7 or 8. Unless you return to have it redone over time. Do you have the dog years or something?
 
All I am worried about when I am 40 years older is if I will still remember what happened 10 minutes ago (and there is a 1 in 3 chance of not being able to)

To me tattoos are a very personal thing and not to everyone's taste. In my opinion there are 3 main reasons to get a tattoo. They are:

1. Fashion, because its cool etc. these ones should be done in Henna because in years to come you will look back and think why.

2. To mark a poignant moment in life, as a permanent reminder of an occasion regardless of what it is, but has a personal meaning to the wearer. In this instance who cares what it will look like in years to come as long as you like it. (BTW this is my reason for inking)

3. Love of art, lets face it this is the most permanent and committed approach to collecting art.

So to the OP, a good tattoo that covers what was a tattoo maybe obtained using reason A. As it is your design, it will always be a personal thing to you, so who cares.
 
Regardless of how you feel about tattoos, if I wanted one of my dog I'd be pleased with a result like that.
 
I really dislike tattoos, but your doggy pic is much better than what it covered. And of course if you are into that tattoo thing getting something peronal like this must be better than the usual Galec patterns everyone else seem to be getting.

I once heard of a bloke who had his girlfriends name tattoed on his arm and some time afterwards they split up. His girlfriends name was "Norma" and removing the tattoo altogether was not an option.

He went back to the tattoo artist and had the letter "l" added to her name.

That is not really possible. What you think you want forever at age 20 is not the same as what you think you want forever at 40.

Your styles change, fashions change, thinking changes. Part of having tattoos is accepting that. I will admit that I would not have the same tattoos now that I had 20 years ago but it is not something that keeps me up at night!
 
Love that, the artist has captured it beautifully.

I want similar of my dog but worry that the artist may not capture him just right.
 
I think your artist has done a cracking job there!
Does make me chuckle every time the anti-tat brigade insist we will one day regret our tats. I never knew there were so many out there with the power to see the future! :)
