Does anyone have experience of the GPS logging devices for Nikons? So far I've narrowed the choice down to Nikon's own GP-1, the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr Plus RT10 or one of the HK clones, but I'd like some feedback before spending more than is strictly necessary....:D
 
What about a separate geotagger and some plugin software for Lightroom. Should be cheaper...

I considered that, the reason I like the look of the GiSTEQ product is it's tiny and just sits over the 10-pin plug on the front of a Nikon, so it would always be there, without getting in the way. The Nikon (and the ebay specials) sits on the hotshoe, so gets in the way and I'd probably forget to take a separate unit with me....

My geotagger sits in my pocket. I do forget to take it with me though :(
 
Oohh I'm after one for mine....:) *nudge*

Only my iPhone that does the GPS, want everything to have the exact location in aperture.

You need to check how much power they draw from the camera battery, I've heard reports that they can kill your battery very quickly which has always put me off them

Had a quick look and the PhotoTracker apparently consumes 40mW and the Nikon unit 180mW, both of which figures are meaningless to me, except that one is obviously much bigger than the other....
 
I've had the Genuine Nikon GP-1 Graham - it didn't use all that much battery - have also had the cheaper version as well from HK... had the cheaper version 1st then got the real mccoy... As I wanted to see just how good they are (GPS on camera that is)...

There is nothing in it tbh - apart from one saying Nikon & then having the joy of coughing up around the £180 mark for it or a cheaper version that does exactly the same for £61...

I was looking at getting the Yongnuo N918/N1 from a dude in HK from the bay - looks very familiar to the Nikon GP-1 in all looks etc...

Only reason I sold was didn't get much use for it... But I might get this one soon thou Yongnuo N918/N1 why I'm not so sure .... :thinking: Prob cos its another gadget :$ :lol:

:thinking: For a Nikon or a N918/N1 - :whistling: would they do a discount if you ordered 2 as I could be interested in getting another :lol:
 
I got an bay one (cant remember make or model) for my d300.

Left it permanently in the hotshot connected to the 10 pin connector but also had a thng to attach it to the strap instead of hotshot.

Does what it says on the tin really... all pics are geo-tagged and had the bonus of if it loses track of where you are (say you go indoors) it uses its last known position where as apparently the nikon one just doesn't tag at all.

Does have potential to be a doh purchase but Ive got a lot of holiday pics from 5+ years ago and have no idea where abbots they were taken... if they were geo-tagged back then it would have been nice so hopefully I will be glad of it in the future

Did you finally take the plunge & get yourself a GPS :shrug:

I've ordered the Yongnuo N918/N1 - so when it arrives I'll let you know of the outcome if its crap or not... :thinking: If your interested that is...:lol:

I've had the GP-1 in the past so shall see if it competes or not (that was for those who dont read the full thread before commenting :lol:)
 
I bought one when the D200 was my main camera and used it a good few times. A second flash bracket would be handy as the GPS unit stopped me having the flash attached. I did consider attaching one of the brackets from Graham onto the side of the SB800.

I wrote support into my photoshop addons for the GPS unit but I am delaying buying one for the D700 at the moment because I am convinced that the D4 will have GPS built in so it would be a waste :)
 
Well mine arrived approx 2 weeks from ordering...

1st impressions its like the Nikon GP-1 but with this the 10pin connector is fixed as the GP-1 isn't as it has 2 leads...

Its seems just slightly smaller & thinner than the original GP-1 (going from memory). It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb & so blends in quite nicely...

It fits snuggly on the hot shoe without movement so it wont fall off the camera.. The lead is short in length & so doesn't get in the way of fingers nor controls/buttons..

Took its time finding a satelite but its been in the post for 2 weeks but after finding one it picks it up an registers the location & time.. Works in ViewNX2 an pinpoints your location...

Havent tried the shutter release as didn't get it for that asall ready have a wireless shutter release remote..

Would I recommend it :shrug:

YES esp at the good ole price of £60 delivered...

So if you want a cheaper GPS for your Nikon than the Nikon GP-1 GPS then this is the one to go for...

10 out of 10 from me :thumbs:

& yes I have owned an original Nikon GP-1 GPS before anyone asks how do/would I know...

So Graham - go for it as at at least a 1/3 of the price of a Nikon GP-1 its well worth the money..
 
What is the best price for the GPS? Does the D700 version work with the D300 & D200? The D200 one I bought didn't work with the D700 although the D700 did recognise it. I see £30-40 and £60 mentioned? I can get a GP-1 for just over £100 but at about half that it could be worth doing even if my next camera has it built in.

The one I got the N-918/N1 has the 10pin connector (moulded to the GPS unit) so if your camera has the 10pin connector for the GPS then it should work - looking at the listing on mine (Youngnuo N-918/N1) it works with the D700, D300, D300s D2X D2XS D2HS - IIRCthe D90 has a usb type connection in the side of the body as where as others (as stated) have the 10pin connector...

Works just as good as the Nikon GP-1 but with out the cost that additional cost that goes with it.... Althou with this one you DONT get the strap adapter, D90 lead, nor a manual or a Nikon box - then again the GP-1 costs £190+ compared to a very similar looking GPS @ £60 delivered...

Thanks, the D200 does have the 10 pin connector BUT it is not in that list and the GPS I did have for the D200 didn't work with the D700! Will need to check with them as the D300 will end up back with Mrs_C and I will be keeping the D200 and D700

EDIT: Just checked the advert and it says D200 :)

The only problem with these units is sitting on the flash mount. Would like to stick a flash there! So looks like I need to either velcro it to the flash or attach a cold shoe to the grip or something like that.

There is that problem or you could just have it hanging - as it wont hang that much due to the size of the lead...

Hmmm Not too keen on letting it just hang down :eek: It did work quite well with an external flash bracket but it becomes quite heavy. The SB800 comes with a spare battery compartment lid so I was going to glue a cold shoe to the lid but ended up with an SB900 instead.
