Hi

Just looking for recommendation for a GPS thing to fit my nikon d5100.

Don't really want to spend loads but need something that works and works all the time.

It's only for fun and logging places on Lightroom maps, holidays, days out and such.

Any used/has one they would recommend ..?

You mean a decoder that sticks the coordinates of your location into the EXIF?

I bought one for my D300s from ebay for about £30. Does exactly what teh Nikon GP-1 does. But cheaper. Think the D5100 has a differnt plug to the d300s, but they are available on ebay.

Have you a smartphone? You may not need to spend any money.Y
You could take a photo, with your smartphone, which would record the GPS data. Once back in lightroom, import the smartphone photo, along with the photos of the same location from your dslr and copy over the gps data to the dslr photos, in the map module.

That's a easy way, thanks

But a bit hard work! If you can afford a smart 'phone spend £30 on an ebay GP-1 equivilant. It's loads easier!
I have one that I use on and off. Only when teh location is relevant or, when i'm on holiday and i want to remenmber where I was on that day.
It's intresting to plot your holiday on lightroom!

After looking, their are loads of different ones.

Any one got a name/model type thing

To be honest, I don't think it matters, so long as it has the correct connection for your camera. I'd guess that the gps decoders are made by a very few firms. Nikon certainly don't make theirs.
On my d300s and now my D700, it can take a few minutes to aquire the position. If you shoot before it has, it justs tags the picture with the last acquired position.Annoying!!Therefore, I configure my D700 to always stay on and hence always have the correct position. Downside is that my battery lasts 5 hrs!!

I use the Viewranger app on my phone. It can record a track log while I'm out and about, which can up uploaded to my Dropbox. When I've uploaded the memory card to Lightroom I import the track from Dropbox and drag and drop the images onto the track. Lightroom will automatically tag the photos by comparing the time code on the GPS track and the EXIF data. The other option is to get one of the basic Garmin handheld hiking GPS unit and use that to record a tracklog.
It does involve a couple more button presses than having it done in camera, but I think it's preferable to having to attach an external GPS unit to the camera.

Just buy the GP-1 copy on ebay. Otherwise it'll become a faff!.
Main time I use it is when I'm somewhere I don't usually go.J ust so I can remember exactly where I was when I tripped the shutter. The unit sits on the hotshoe and you forget it's there.
I guess It's only used for 30% of my pics.
